Goodbye to Jack and thanks for the memories!

Ireland was lucky to have Jack as Manager - he lifted the team and he entertained like no one before or since.

We all got a spring in our step out of it, and we smiled and were happy.

Thanks again!

The accent didn’t hurt either. Even by Northumbrian standards, Charlton’s native Ashington is noted for its unique relationship with English. According to one joke, an Ashington woman goes to an out-of-town hairdresser and asks for a “perm”, so the hairdresser starts reciting: “I wandered lonely as a cloud.”

I used to bump into Jack when salmon fishing in the West. He was a great angler. Everybody loved him over there and I don't think he ever had to buy a pint as they were set up for him as soon as he walked into any pub in the area.

He loved Ballina and had a house just on the outskirts but couldn't join the local angling club which controlled some of the best stretches of the River Moy in the town. The club rules said members must reside within the town, the cut-off point being the speed limit restriction signs around Ballina. Somebody arrived with a mini-digger and moved the derestriction sign a couple of hundred yards past Jack's house. Not a word was said about it :aidan

He gave us great great days - RIP Jack
