I bought the above a couple of years back knowing that it was a >130,000 mile bike and virtually original.

The final drive has always had a load of back lash and an inspection showed the splines to the wheel are all but knackered. It has now started leaking oil too, throwing it out onto the rear tyre.

Can those airhead techies amongst you advise what is my best course of action? Buy an exchange fully refurbed unit from Motorworks at £500+ or can the new parts be fitted without specialist tools etc.

I replaced the big bearing and seal in my 1150GS myself so aren't a complete technical disaster but I don't have the likes of a hydraulic press or specialist tools.

Replacement unit; telephone call to Mikey or others nearer Glasgow or DIY?

The neutral switch isn't working either, is that a gear box out job?

Short the wires from the switch and the light illuminates so I'm certain that it's the switch.

The spline can be replaced, though it is a specialised job, total strip, remove weld using a lathe, hydraulic press needed then weld crownwheel to new spline shaft.
If you go down the motorworks route they will probably refurbish your unit.
Wonder who does them?
:hide:hide:D
Regarding the neutral switch,
Remove rear engine mount bolt,
Knock out spacer tube, you can then replace switch:thumby:

Thanks Mike, appreciate the help.

It sounds like the refurb/exchange route is the way to go, especially as the replacement unit has harder splines. Probably means that it will take out the opposite side of the spline instead.

Do you think he possibly missed that little bit Mike??

Wot E says! Remember to check if your switch has the spacer ring or not there are two switches

Need to shake the brain this morning to remember the options on that one

Thanks Doc.

I got a PM from another member pointing out quite subtlely that I was being a plank. Correct comm's are now being established.

I appreciate the tip on the switch, I'd have almost certainly been a victim of sods law and got the wrong one!

If the neutral switch appears to work when you have it out, but doesn't when you shift gears, then fiddle about with spacers (washers) and you might get a result without buying a new one. It could be that it is not reaching far enough into the selector mechanism. Also, when replacing the spacer bar (see Mikeyboy's message), if it's tight, take it easy when knocking it in as it's a pain to line up if you go too far. Ask me how I know all this??

Also, I have some spare switches of both types.

What bevel ratio are you after?
