I have read many posts saying about how hard the seats are on some bikes? I went out on my 750gs today which isnt to bad but I decided to wear my padded cycling under shorts under my trousers, I did a 120 mile trip and felt no discomfort at all, they were really comfortable. This got me thinking all these people who are thinking of spending hundreds to get seats changed this could be a quick fix starting at around £15 even the full gel ones are only around £50 so well worth a try.

Sorry if this has been said before but I couldnt find it in the search. Thanks

I use a pair of padded cycling shorts when I do longer transfers (across Europe) on the bike with some longer legs, and it makes a huge difference.
I don’t think it’s the padding making a difference, but the underpants being “elastic”.

Never ever changed a seat on a bike and never planned to.

I did a big 3 month trip 16 yrs ago and bought 3 x Ex-Officio (branded) stretchy , breathable , wicking , seamless underpants from a specialist outdoor shop and they made a big difference to comfort. They were expensive at the time but I still have 2 pairs as I only use them a couple of times a year for bike trips. Quite a few more options / brands now.

I wear Lycra close fitting long cycling shorts, that don’t have any padding in them. They work well for me, as there are no seams on pressure points.

Before you pull your cycling shorts up, apply some "Assos Chamois Creme" to your bum pressure points. V soothing and long lasting.

I've just bought a pair of these pants advertised on FB.

they have a Lycra and some support areas built in for the plums

going to give them a hard workout later this month

if not i'll send em back

Cycling shorts ar OK but .... they are a twat to piss out of

Now that is a downside you generally only realise when you're behind a bush deperately searching for.....

Even worse in colder weather when you have a layer of long johns on as well!

I use cycling shorts.

Brill, cheap, work well. 650 miles across Spain in a day on an R1100GS without much bother. Each to his own, but they work well enough for me.

That's true of bid style shorts - On the m/c the ones I use are cotton, no bigger than normal undies but have the gel/ foam cushioning. No dramas behind the bush!

Shorts

When I first posted this I didnt expect so many comments back it seems there are more of us sensible people then I thought, makes me wonder why so many people post about spending hundreds on seat replacements and re builds. I suppose it’s worth it if you plan on a mega 2 to 3 thousand mile trip.

As wrote above, I never considered changing the seat.

People who change seats generally get those "throne" shaped things or add sheep skins or the like.
I never really understood how anyone can ride on these as, generally, riding a motorbike requires a little bit of physical movement on the bike itself (slide even so lightly on the sides even if you are riding conservatively, etc.).
For all I can see those kind of solutions actually only exacerbate the problem. if anything.

And that is why you get tired/achy quicker on motorways than on twisty roads.

The bike shorts are, IMHO, the best cheapest solution. I guess anything that "compresses" will probably help the same way.

I hate to disagree but a 2 to 3 thousand mile trip isn’t mega. It’s about average. 10,000 miles plus is mega. Plus it depends on how long you keep the bike. At risk of diverting the thread something that annoys me constantly is all the comments when someone buys a new (to them) bike about selling it on. I got my F800GS in 2011, it now has just over 104,000 miles on the clocks. This means I have done 90,000 miles on this bike in the last 9 years. I have no intention of selling the 800 in the foreseeable future. The money I spent on the Sargent seat, 11 years ago, was negligible considering the number of miles I have done on the bike. At this point the only reason I am interested in what the bike might be worth is for my insurance renewal.

I have cycle shorts and Moto Skivees and find either help on the long haul. Heck, I’ve even tried the cycle shorts underneath the Skivees ! But the Sargent seat was the best investment I’ve made....combined with the shorts, long days are a breeze.

I bought the Touratech comfort seat for the Multi, as the stock seat is shite. The improvement is night and day.

I also found the stock seats on my GS’s pretty crap as well (the GSA seat was much better), which bugs me when spending so much on a bike.

I ordered some Moto Skiveez adventure shorts a few weeks ago, and am still waiting for them to arrive, so when they eventually do, will see how they are on both seats, as they seem to get a lot of good reviews.

I use Nike seamless running shorts, have done for years since someone (probably on here) mentioned it. Made with some anti-bacterial material two pairs can last a good few days before needing washing.
