Dumfries and Galloway roads.

I’ve wakened up to worse Saturday mornings.

With a good weather forecast on Friday, I made a late decision to head SW.

My well used Booking DotCom found me a cheap bunk in Sandend, a place we stopped in once upon a time while lodging down that way for short break.

Only a nasty wee sunny shower around 5pm dampened the roads for while, but provided one of the biggest and best ever rainbows.

A nice room. Nice food. Nice beer. What’s not to like.

Had to visit the lighthouse. And cafe. Then headed for the forest road to Straiton.

Even the main road past Cairnryan was quiet and very enjoyable.

I shouldn’t advertise it :) but the A714 and the road from Straiton to Cumnock are now on my list of favourites.

The A702 down the valley has been on the list for years of course.

ps - this week’s forecast is dismal

Aye the road from Straiton to dalmellington to new cumnock is great now its been resurfaced ..wasnt so great a few yrs when the open cast mines were open..potholes,worn out tarmac, ruts etc ..great swoopy road now tho ..and all within half n hr from me :D

We had the first night of our honeymoon at the Hazel Bank guesthouse, that was 33 years ago, on the 15th of this month. It was as far as we felt we could make it the first evening. Then had a posh night the next day at Letterfinlay Lodge on the bank of Loch Linnie. We just winged it from then on. One of the best holidays we have had. Might be an idea to go for a revisit in a couple of weeks!

The forecast was so good that I set off early and did most of Galloway today. Was snookered with an unexpected closure of the A741 east of Dalmellington. Other road closure signs are popping up in a few places. After a big detour I got back on my planned figure 8 route near Girvan.

With temperature ranging from 4 to a max of 13, my hot vest earned it’s keep for 10 hours or so.

Roads generally very quiet with the A702 valley to myself. A few damp roads means I’ve got a bike wash job tomorrow.

Could be my shortened riding year has been signed off with today’s 360 mile circuit.
