Guys,
I know there are some MacBook gurus around, so here goes :

My MacBook has 8gb of RAM and 128gb hard-drive. After 6 years of extensive use every day, it's starting to feel a bit slow & the memory is getting full.

What options do I have to improve the storage and / or performance ?

It looks to me like I'd need to spend £1800 ish to buy a current model with more memory & speed, which feels a bit steep !

Thanks

John

Should still be pretty fast.

If you have an SD slot in it - you can get stubby SD adaptors and bung a 256Gb Micro SD card in it - and move all your docs/files to that, and open, edit them from there. Set up to save all downloads to that too.

Below - is the expensive option, but will be good.

(smaller/cheaper ones are avail -128Gb)

If you have basecamp on the machine - I believe all the routes saved can eat up a fuckload of space on your drive, too.

Go for a factory reset (after backing up all files) as long as you can re-install apps cheaply (Office 365 will reinstall).

The 2015 model is a pretty strong model - worth working on it.

I'd start with, can I afford the latest tech as the 5 year old one is out of date? If the answer is yes, I'd buy the latest, if no, I'd probably buy an external drive to release the storage and uninstall everything that I didn't need to help the RAM.

You probably have an option to increase the RAM providing your model has the capability, an Apple store will do it for you if you don't fancy mucking about with those tiny screws.

the 2015 Pro is a well thought of machine with a decent keyboard. It should have plenty of high-performance life left in it.

I don't think it is lacking in RAM.

(and I'm not eve a Mac fan)

Thanks for the suggestions.
My model does not appear to have any option to upgrade the 8gb RAM, it's fixed.
Does look like SSD upgrades are available, I can get 500gb for about £200 which seems a decent route.

If it has a traditional hard drive, switching to an SSD will make it feel like a new machine.
It really is an amazing improvement.

No, the existing is a 128gb SSD although apparently slow by today's technology. I've just ordered a 480gb upgrade.

You should be able to upgrade the RAM as well Mac books usually have 2 slots so your 8Gb may actually be 2x 4GB chips which might be upgradeable to 2x 8GB chips

Mine's a 2013 but essentially the same as yours. It's still as fast as feck, it gets used for still and moving image manipulation as well as heavy work use on large artwork files. The only issue I have is SSD memory which is shite, but then Apple want you to use their Cloud, outrageous all the same on such expensive kit........

Anyway, like I said, mines still as fast as feck, all I do is keep all files off the SSD and on a separate drive. If that doesn't work for you then maybe there is something else going on as there's nought wrong with your kit.

The thing that pisses me off with newer Mac books Like mine is that there is no CD/DVD or card slot

It forces one into buying an apple adapter ...

I’ve got a MacBook Pro sitting in a cupboard at home that needs a new battery and a new screen which won’t be cheap and I keep looking at it and wondering whether to hose money at it or just get rid for a pittance and buy new.

I know the sensible answer is to bin it and buy new but it still looks like a good MacBook that would be worth fixing.

I had a similar dilemma recently although mine was only the battery. I wanted a genuine Apple battery but was told my laptop, a 2011 MacBook Pro 13” was ‘vintage’ and parts were no longer available for it.
Not wanting to give up I bought a battery from Amazon, fitted it myself which was dead easy and it’s ok now.
Certainty worth the £47…

CD? Get with the program gramps:D

Modern macbooks don't even have USB ports. Thunderbolt and a headphone socket ir all.

Definately worth upgrading what you've got if you can, mine still get used heavily on a daily basis, i speced mine out when i bought it so it's a 2.8Ghz I7, 16Gb Ram with apples 1Tb flash drive and even 5 years later i'd still have to spend a fair wack to match it's performance...

A program called 'ClenMyMac' does a great job of keeping the performance up there and making the most of what you've got ;)
