Just swapping out gsa box for one with a taller 6th and found this , is it just slave or something worse?

If the clutch master cylinder fluid level is OK and you haven't had to top it up it's gearbox. Gear oil has a very strong and distinctive smell.

Ah roger , I’m replacing the box anyway so that kind of rules the need for that

Do you have Felt seal on your pushrod??
If not update to the later one with a felt seal

Bingo, wiped the orifice and it stinks of gearbox oil, clutch reservoir is normal so looking gearbox rather than slave

A quick way to ID the crud is to see if it will mix with water.
No mix - oil
Mix - brake fluid
No mix - oil
Mix - brake fluid
useful little tip.
