I have got my 1974 r90s up on the ramp to do a bit of tidying and recommission work and yesterday I took the front cover off the engine to change the points . I just happened to touch the tachometer cable and it separated from its housing . So I thought I would be able to remove the housing with a pair of pliers and then remove the helical gear and the metal sleeve and oil seal .So I remove the timing cover yesterday evening to try and sort the situation. Silly me !!!

I soaked it in WD-40 overnight and with some heat I managed to remove the aluminium cable cover this morning However try as I might I could not remove the sleeve to get to the inner oil seal . In the end I thought it was better to try and save camshaft drive gear itself and the sleeve and to forfeit the cover. Very sad time !!
I managed to cut a sleeve out relatively easily using my Dremel and little grinding disc but the oil seal proved very difficult i was clearly bonded with corrosion. In its previous life there must have been problems in this area as there is an 8-mm chip on the end of one of the spiral teeth and the spacing washer is missing.

So I'm now in the hunt for a new timing cover and was wondering if any members might consider selling one to help me out. And will be 8 mm chip at the end of one of the spoil teeth be a problem or not what. Also how thick is that missing washer? Thanks guys

Don't waste your time soaking things in WD40 use Plus Gas.....far far better

Byron, I have one you might like. Really good condition, if not new. As ever, cheaper than MW!! Give me a shout?

Unfortunately Tim's timing cover was not for the smaller diameter cam shaft, so still on the hunt for one .

Spot the difference

Apart from the damage, spot the difference between the pre-09/75 and the post-

Size of the camshaft seal opening....I also have dAmage on the helical Baer for the Rev counter, should I try and replace it? But how do you remove it and it doesn’t make any noise......

If it works still, don't mess with it!!

PS. you were right about the camshaft hole size!!

And on the early bikes the casting for the alternator location is 105mm not 107mm :thumby:
