Dear all,

I remember reading in here that Castrol syntrax was absolutely essential for either the gearbox oil change or the final drive oil change, but cannot find the relevant posts...i

Could someone set me right please?

Any gear oil with GL5 specification Will do But don;t get a hybrid GL4 / GL5 or anything claiming to be some sort of miracle multigrade

ONLY get a singular GL5 specification! Its important! Without getting technical it's to do with the shear strength of the oil and how it protects the gears from premature wear

"MY" preferences are

Straight EP 80 or 90 GL 5 for gearbox

and 85W140 GL5 for Final drive

I've never had any FD problems since changing oil viscosity on any of the bikes I serviced

Castrol Syntrax 75w90 is the recommended FD and gearbox oil for the hexhead I believe, although 85/140 is, in my opinion, better, it's what I use and have done for years.

No point messing about. Just use the long life syntrax spec bmw recommends. it's not expensive but an FD rebuild is
