As the BMW parts list and diagram are incorrect and therefore misleading for the steering head assembly I thought it worthwhile clarifying what is needed :

Two 28x52x16 bearings are required , part 9 in the diagram below - the BMW Part number is 31 42 7 663 941 (only one bearing is shown in the diagram and a second should be shown between parts 9 and 10)

One washer which is part 10 , the BMW part number is 31 42 7 696 734 (this is actually shown in the wrong place on the diagram and should go where part 11 is shown)

Two rings , BMW part number 31 42 1 234 509 (these are the bearing dust caps , one for the bottom and one for the top , shown as part 11 in the diagram but should be where part 10 is shown and the diagram is missing the upper one which sits between parts 8 and 9) . The BMW parts list is also incorrect as it lists only one of these when two are required

One covering plate , BMW part number 31 42 7 696 900 which is shown as part 8 in the diagram . The BMW parts list is incorrect as it lists two of these and only one is required

Part 8 the cover plate , 31 42 7 696 900 , is specific to the G650X range of bikes and should not need changing as it can just be lifted off during disassembly . If it is damaged or missing and is required it is no longer available from BMW , but an alternative , near identical part can be sourced from an F800GS , BMW part number 31 42 7 692 248

Parts 11 , 31 42 1 234 509 , the bearing dust caps are used on numerous bikes and for certain the lower one will need changing as it gets damaged when removing the lower bearing . These are available from BMW

Part 10 the washer , 31 42 7 696 734 , which is used to position the lower bearing at the correct height from the lower fork brace can get damaged during the lower bearing removal and may then need changing . It is specific to the G650X range of bikes . Its inner and outer dimensions are listed on the part description and it is 2mm thick . This part is no longer available from BMW

Thanks to Jim Carrie at Williiams BMW in helping me with this . Jim can supply all of the available BMW parts and also has some stock of the part 10 washer as we had some sourced and made locally

You can also buy a kit off eBay which consists of two SKF bearings and two dust caps :

Excellent John, thanks for taking the time and effort for compiling such an informative list.
