I’ve got a windows desktop computer that after being turned on it shuts itself down again. This then repeats again and again.
Is it dead or is it repairable?

Could be a corrupt bios. Are you able to interrupt the bios progress?

Might be worth discussing with a local repair shop, and see what they will charge for a bit of investigation/repair.

Not able to do anything with it at all. About 8 years old now so maybe time to get rid?

Could be.

I had a prob with the bios on my PC, but it was a high spec one when purchased around 6yrs ago, so spent a small amount of cash fixing it, and upgrading to Win10.

How far does it get?

Does it reach the desktop? of shutdown before then .

From some years back, i had a similar problem, there was a setting in bios that was what would the computer do on an error post

The default was shut down / restart

You could change it to "post", and it would show the error on screen

May be a faulty ram strip, or hard drive failing

What machine & spec, memory ??

Maybe power supply

My PC had a similar problem and when I looked at log files it came up with a power error. I replaced the power supply and problem went away.

Easy to do as I had a spare power supply. If I didn't have the spare I wouldn't have bothered but replaced the PC with a new one.

I’ll take another look tomorrow (virtual quiz night starting soon) - thanks for all the advice

Might be a solder joint on the motherboard that gets too hot just as OS come on, then shuts down to start again..? Had a Tv that used to do something similar. I'd also try freeze it in Boot Up and see if it stays on, then it software related. If it fails at this stage, it must be hardware related..

Amazingly, my son had the same problem on his PC, start up shut down, repeat.
He had changed the RAM board for a new one, when he put the old one back in it works fine, as mentioned in post#5, I can only assume it was the new RAM board that was faulty.

is the power supply getting hot? Is there a resident arachnid blocking the fan?

is the interior of the box covered in shit causing alternative conductive paths?

look at some routine maintenance like basic hygiene before anything else

then look at connections. Unplug and reseat all connections and daughter boards from the motherboard

I think the fact it restarts itself after shutdown is significant. I don't think this would happen if the power supply conked out on load because I think that would be a crash stop, needing a button-push to restart.

Checked power etc then F9 during fire up and all seems back to normal.
No idea as to what caused the constant on/off problem so fingers crossed all sorted.
Think I now need a new computer.
Thanks for all the advice

Back to square one!
10 minutes after the joy the machine turned itself off and now back to the constant turn on/turn off cycle again.

Ipad search for a new laptop begins.

Could be worth £50 to get it looked at (and fixed if it is the BIOS).

Or - that could be £50 towards your new PC.

Depending on budget (and if a PC not laptop) - I like the machines by PCspecialist.

Happy hunting.

If you are still up for trying to fix (I would guess at Ram related)-

I would consider a re seat of the ram.
Power off -
power plug out -
lid off -
touch a metal item plugged in to earth youself and remove static
remove ram noting what is in what slot
wipe ram connections with alchol,
air blast the connector and re insert.
Lid back on,
reboot - see how you go.

If by some chance it has loads of ram - you may want to try putting just one ram card in and see if stable on one, if so, swap in other and if then fails you know the problematic unit.
