Latest project..........Z1000A1

Andy, thanks for the offer:thumb very good of you. :beerjug:

I’m on the Z1 owners club site, a guy on there who is well into these bikes has now told me that because the break on the cover is on the bridge of the cover and not where the shells are fitted,I can just bolt them back as they are. He said these caps don’t control the end float so can be used as is..... which does make sense to me....

I have also sourced two secondhand no.2 cam covers which I may be able to use, all be it possibly with a little work.

Well if you find they’re worn or warped let me know. If you’re lucky you can often get away with just taking a few thou off the caps and leave the head alone. Now our house move is imminent (next Wednesday) I might find all my adjustable reamers because I used to have a wooden box with about 20 of them in it and they’re really good for that kind of job because they’ve got a decent lead on the cutting edges so you don’t get any deflection as they start the second bore.

Good to see another one saved

Love the early Zeds, I will be watching your project with interest, give me a shout if you get stuck with anything, although the guys on Z1OC site are a great source of information.
This one (second Image on the Z1OC stand at Stafford 2004 or might have been 2005) was my bike back in 79/80, I tracked it down and bought it back in 2002 fully restored it. Sold it a few years later.

First image is my current 1000A1, 7000 miles from new and unrestored.

"Diamondwine Red"

Cant see from your images but a common fault specific to the 1000 A1s and A2s is corrosion on the rear foot rest hangers (more so on UK bikes) the pressed hanger did not have a drain hole so filled with water and rotted from the inside. hope yours are ok.

My 77 Kawa triple is Candywine Red , where did they think up these names. The 78 KH's were available in Halibut Blue,Ill leave that there.....

The strip down of the frame continued whilst I awaited a tool to remove the rotor which was jammed on the crank:blast. Frame certainly in need of a good blast and powder coat.......
The swinging arm bushes on the Z1000 are needle roller and have obviously been greased via the nipple regularly as they actually seem very good, so probably won’t need to be changed........

Powder coating a Zthou frame. I powder coated one of my a Z9 frames and regretted it. The bloody things are made of chocolate and the flex will soon have the coating crack. Don’t do it.

Perhaps whoever did yours did a crap job of it. I know of a number of zeds which have been powder coated with no problems at all.And some with high mileages.Strange thing is people told me the same about powder coating the commando frame, except it was the vibration that caused the coating to crack:blast it’s usually the advice given by people who prefer paint to powder coating...............

You bike fella you can do what you like, I personally don’t really care.. The firm who did the coating on my frame did an excellent job they even managed to save the original headstock sticker.

Perhaps that’s the reason the powder cracked...
Firstly the frame should have been media blasted ,how do you mask a sticker?
Secondly, powder coat is cured at @200 deg.
How did a sticker withstand that?
Unless of course you are saying they managed to remove said sticker first,in which case ignore the above.:D:D

In any case,
If something is flexing sufficiently to crack properly applied powder,(after all it’s plastic.)
Paint would crack as well.
Probably closely followed by the frame:blast

Goes without saying the frame was prepared correctly. The headstock sticker was protected with a metal plate sealed over it. I only wish I had the bike now to show how it cracked. And when it does, and it will, there’s no working with the horrible stuff. Not sure about you claim of paint cracking but paint can be repaired quite easily and cheaply unlike powder coating. It’s the same thing with my off road defender powder coated parts unless coating for bikes or cars. Unless it’s part of you business to flog the shit then it’s the all singing and dancing be all and end all. But as I said it that fellas bike he can do what he likes cracking looking bike and good luck to him in his resto.

Engine all apart and gone of for cleaning, rebore, plug thread inserts, etc etc, carbs also gone for cleaning.

Currently trying to get hold of exhausts for it and I’m not sure if the tank is going to be ok........:(

I have a NOS tank in my loft (actually I have 2 the others an A2 tank)both been there for 20 years never been on a bike never had fuel in it and in original factory paint the A1 tank is in Diamond Wine red. Just can’t decide whether to sell it or not.
