Good afternoon all,

Finally got around to getting an xchallenge up north to a radiator specialist today. Spent around 2 1/2 hours with them talking through the issues with the original radiator, as well as my experience with the Pace unit that is no longer available.

We are looking to maintain a thermostat within the radiator but this will require sourcing of a suitable 'stat and some custom fabrication to accommodate it. Hope to have budget costs for a new radiator for the middle of next week..

Will keep you all posted,

Nathan

Progress so far...

Things are progressing, but the thermostat arrangement is presenting some challenges, and my current thoughts are to steer away from the OEM unit (there are only 8 left in the UK) and find something a little more main stream to use instead, purely to prevent any further supply issues.

So...

The core for the radiator was ordered this morning- we had been trying to find ways around the thermostat issue that would be cost efficient. To manufacture a housing similar to the OEM radiator would have cost another £190 at development, which in reality would have added another £50 to the build cost (and still wouldn't have included a thermostat).

So, the plan is now to develop the radiator with a separate stand alone thermostat. This should be a lot more cost effective. We may also be able to develop this as a retrofit for bikes fitted with the old Pace radiators as well.

The core is still 4 weeks away, so time to work on the thermostat solution before the radiator gets welded up.

Can u put me down for one please Nathan:thumb

Won't fit on a 701 you know :D

Putting 2 and 2 together, what is more appealing about a X compared to a 701?

I could be interested in a rad but it depends on the cost.

For me its charachter, and the bike fits like a glove. 701 is a good bike, far more modern than the xc but I keep getting drawn back:blast:okay

Off the top of my head the following:

the X doesn't have an O ring issues in the clutch mechanism (this can fail from anything from 200miles on a new bike), The rockers don't fall to bits (possibly resolved on later bikes), and the fuel pump isn't fussy like the 701/690, and if it does fail it's much easier to change.

Just my thoughts.

I did a test ride on the 701 and my current X-Country on the same day. I didn't like the narrow and high seat, the 21" front wheel and the throttle response on the 701. I even stalled it while approaching a roundabout in second gear, something that has never happened on my X.

I'm sure the 701 is a great enduro bike but the X is a better travel bike.
