It seems the inability to route OSM maps was, thankfully, a bug and not a new policy, and update 6.1 fixes it. I haven’t updated yet but I’ll test it tomorrow.
But, the update may bugger up any routes or tracks you already have - so back everything up, delete all tracks, routes and waypoints from the device, update, then reimport them, just in case.
No news yet on the inability to load maps to the computer.
It does seem, that not doing any kind of update whilst on trip would be a good idea. This used to be easy to manage but the new over the air updates make it a bit harder.
