Murmansk, a city too far?

Our plan is to head to Mongolia next year but covid has to settle. If we can only get part of the way east then we may còncentrate on Russia and I've started looking into it, just in case. I've been to Russia a lot but for work so flying in and out, looking forward to a slower mode of transport.

Advice? Go.

Language - buy Linkword, easy to get the basics. https://www.linkwordlanguages.com/product/russian-beginners-course-levels-1-and-2-download-package/
Level 1 will enable you to read stuff and understand menus etc.

Thanks.

You are skipping the best parts of Norway i.e. the South Western fijords and the Lofoten Islands. Add on about 5-6 more days for those:)

The route is not final, just a rough idea of the miles and time needed. Thanks.

1st world problems. Pick a route the donkey can take to get there.

A bit more detail about the maps for those who in the future might require similar.

Russia and Belarus, 1:2 000 000 or 1:10 000 000.

Belarus is not an easy country to get a detailed map of or maybe I have not searched the correct publishers.

Map detail is not the best given it is a 1:10 000 000. Covers a vast area of Russia. On the back is detail in 1:2 000 000 of roads in and around the cities.

You will find this handy little booklet with all sorts of advice and city centre maps.

As expected the Baltic states map (Michelin map 781, 1:500 000) has a lot more detail which would make navigating of the main roads much easier. This is all you need to transverse Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia. BTW, one of our security guards is from Alytus. A town with an interesting history.

Reise Know How Russiin West map in 1:2 000 000. Enough detail to get you where you want to go for what I presume is the touristy bits. Even the military area next to Barents Sea has enough detail. Strategic product placement :D. This might be the map I will use predominantly.

What about bike friendly hotels and parking :D

Fear not.

Where can I find information about the best time to go, where to get petrol, how dangerous it is, are the roads any good etc etc.

Additionally to the Visa requirements. If you plan to ride the lessor roads, particularly near the Finland border a permit must be obtained form the FSB to allow foreigners to travel in this areas. Worth it to make enquiries as to this requirement and have a contact address. I doubt this is widely policed but just in case, I don't fancy porridge in a gulag :D

Absolutely M' lord. The info on here might help others realise that the world is bigger than Europe and doesn't consist of the Picos, Pyrenees or Alps.

I know were I want to go and how I want to go. Now I just need to go :thumby:

Indeed.

It's amazing what you can find out, just by surfing the Internet and a few sensible search phrases.

I am planning something similar to Kiev.

Don’t get caught out by cops producing bullshit paperwork telling you what the fines are for varying offences, look it up and print your own laminated copies because the fuckers ‘banned’ me then made me pay to get my licence back off them when the speed they accused me of was nowhere near automatic banning territory.

Just 1 c u n t fucked up the planning of this trip. What a fucking dick he is. C u n t.

If you take Bedford as stretching from the roundabout at the top end of Kimbolton Road to the South Wing hospital north to south and Barkers Lane to Queens Park east to west it’s not very big even if you leave your car and walk everywhere.

South of the river is best avoided :D
