Replacing plastic insert on OEM cylinder protector

Hey all,

My new-to-me GS comes pre-scratched so I want to replace a few bits and pieces so I can drop it and scratch it myself.

The bike comes with the OEM protectors (https://www.bahnstormer.co.uk/product/bmw-cylinder-head-protectors/) and I've got myself the replacement plastic. I'm just hoping someone has replaced the plastic before. I can see that it just clips into holes in the metal but it's not clear if I can prise the old one out with the protector still on the bike, or if I need to take the protector off. It doesn't come off readily pulling with fingernails but I don't want to turn a 2 minute job into a longer one if I can help it. Any ideas?

Got to take it off

If it’s a 1200 there’s a screw underneath, one in front and the big one at the back

Don’t over tighten the back one (10NM) as the stud underneath goes into the head and they are easy to strip

Also check it after a few miles when you put it back as I’ve found they can vibrate loose
