Mikeyboy is rebuilding my basic at the moment (see back to basic) and we have got a new PD tank to fit to it. Looking at the parts fiche there might be some additional rubber/plastic mounting parts required for the big tank but it isn’t clear. Researching the forum I found a thread from 2008 entitled tank mounting parts that could relate to the same question, but again it isn’t clear (not to my addled brain anyway).

Does anyone here have a genuine Kalahari (or a Kalahari/PD tank fitted to a paralever) who can advise what the additional parts are (part numbers and photo’s would be brilliant)?

Many thanks

There is a rubber that the tanks mounts on which sits over the frame to protect it and the bottom of the tank.

This should be the same rubber that is used with the smaller tank. The parts at the front of tank on either side are simply stuck on pieces of thicker foam which prevent the tank rubbing on the frame rails.

Remember that there is some clear plastic on the back of the tank to prevent the seat rubbing the paint off it once it’s fitted.

Good luck….

Number 14 on the above I believe.

32 ltr Kalahari Basic Tank

I assume you mean this one and not the PD tank. Check out Real oem BMW which is where this diagram came from. If all else fails I have a basic in the garage with the big tank that I can photograph.
I guessing item 14 is the same for both tanks, again I can check.

Gents thanks for all the replies. It’s the metal Kalahari Basic tank we are fitting as per Tetley’s diagram (which I think is the same as the R80G/S PD tank). The rubber part number 14 in Gelandestrasse’s parts diagram is already there as it’s used for the smaller Basic tank. I also spotted the two small foam pads that need to be fitted and the clear plastic sticker that prevents the seat chafing on the paint, but I got the impression from reading the thread from 2008 that there is another part needed which might be a thick rubber tube that goes over the central frame rail and prevents the tank sitting down directly onto the frame. Looking at the Kalahari/Basic parts catalogue this could be 71602317650 but it isn’t shown in the illustration.

If I Google part number 71602317650 it comes up with this. Do you have one of these fitted to yours Tetley?

Interesting, I can’t recollect seeing one of those under the tank. I’m heading home this pm, so I will have a look then and let you know.

Those tank support rubbers are not needed on the basic only the earlier G/S or ST tanks. The para bikes have the number 14 rubber support at the back of the tank as an alternative.

I cannot recollect anything else other than the rubber at the front of the tank that sits over the short horizontal part of the frame that the tank sits into. You should have this already with your small tank.

And the rubber ‘roller’ on the clip.

Gents thanks again for all the replies. The parts catalogue does suggest there is an extra part required when you fit the big tank to the basic.

The catalogue says the big tank is “only in conjunction with spacer sleeve f sports suspension (PD ) (71602317650), which is the photo on the right below

The catalogue also says the big tank is “ only in conjunction with spacer tube for PD tank (L=169MM) (31422310908), which is the photo on the left below, but this part is no longer available, presumably superseded by the part on the right.

The question is where the hell is it supposed to fit because it’s not shown in the illustration?

The spacer tube is to pre load the front fork springs to help cope with the weight of the extra fuel. It’s not a tank fitment per se but part of the package when fitting the bigger tanks to paralever bikes. Not sure it was for the G/S. I fact I’m sure it wasn’t.

EUREKA!

I just figured it out. The parts are preload spacers to go in the front forks when you fit the big tank.

The good news is that we don’t need these because we’re fitting wilbers uprated springs.

Bit late ….

Sorry a bit late with the photos, seems like you have the answer. Here are the photos anyway.
