R1150RT

So a friend of mine has a 2003 1150RT. We spend over 2 hours this afternoon trying to remove the spring from the rear shock to put a better one on. Could we for the life of us remove it? Is there a technique or special tool required? Be most grateful if someone could give us a steer please.
