Time to travel again...

Mike.. thanks as ever for your excellent RR.

I had similar weird goings on with the starter on my 1100. Ultimately the original starter failed and all I got was the dreaded click click . Luckily I was home when it finally gave up. New starter cured it all. Old one still in drawer waiting to be reconditioned.

I'm sure your diagnosis and get out of jail plan is the correct one... Good luck! Hope it doesn't niggle in your head too much!

I had exactly the same problems with my VW T4 Camper Mike. After a good run I might stop to book in at a campsite maybe, and on returning the starter motor hardly turned it over. A jump lead from the second (leisure) battery to the van's own and she would burst in to life. All electrics checked out OK.

Took my mechanic three years not to be able to find the fault (now sacked) and the AA man twenty five minutes to find it ..... starter motor :thumb2

:beerjug:

I once went through similar frustrations and checking everything with a bike that almost always started ok when hot but was increasingly reluctant to turn over while cooling or cold, and I was just getting the dreaded DRRR, CLICK, CLICK.

Eventually I found that the starter motor spindle bearing bushes had worn oval, and under the extra load of attempting to turn a cold engine, the commutator was lifting ever so slightly off one set of brushes.

On another bike, with similar problems but also while it was hot, it turned out to be a commutator/brush area totally full of carbon dust. I cleaned it all away with electrical contact spray and undercut the commutator segments with a tiny screwdriver and it worked like a new one again. :thumb

I'm no expert but might it be a starter motor issue?

I sleep well - straight through to 0830
Augie.gif
- I clearly needed it.

It's a beautiful day (natch) and this afternoon I aim to be at Fort Bragg, still on the Pacific Coast, about four and a half hours south.

I ablute, dress and get the bike kitted up. In a moment of sheer bravado, I reset the bike's clock to the correct time... :D

This is a strange hotel. Really nicely appointed rooms and very reasonably priced. On the opposite bank of rooms from me (near where I did the work on the bike yesterday), there's a chap - probably about my age - who is suffering from some mental affliction. Or perhaps he's a tweaker (meth addict). He keeps walking into his room then immediately coming back out again, smoking a cigarette and then throwing it away, before retrieving it and smoking it again, twitching all the time he does this. I don't know what has left him in this state, but it must be awful... :(

I finish packing - check the room and - with a frisson of excitement - press the starter. The bike starts perfectly and I make my way onto the 101 South...

IMG_0307-X3.jpg

My hotel was on the northern side of Crescent City, so I ride through the town on the way south...

IMG_0308-X4.jpg

It's a beautiful day, with some wispy clouds and a temperature of about 73F. You couldn't ask for better weather...

IMG_0311-X4.jpg

Everyone is going about their regular Wednesday. Except me. Hi everyone at work!

IMG_0313-X4.jpg

I'm soon out of town and the road enters some woodland - eventually it'll climb into some stands of Redwood trees...

IMG_0317-X4.jpg

There are a lot of roadworks - often, like this one, to repair the highway after landslides...

IMG_0319-X4.jpg

You get the occasional view of the Pacific through gaps in the trees...

IMG_0321-X4.jpg

...the view still a bit smoky, although this will get better as I head south...

IMG_0323-X4.jpg

The bike is behaving impeccably. When I have switched off the engine, to take a picture for example, it has started up again perfectly normally...

IMG_0324-X4.jpg

The stiff onshore breeze from a few days ago has vanished, and it's just a pleasure to ride along the road, soaking in the views...

IMG_0326-X4.jpg

(I'm smiling behind the visor)

IMG_0329-X4.jpg

Well there's something you don't see everyday. This is Paul Bunyan and his blue ox Babe, American legends, at the Trees of Mystery centre at Klamath...

IMG_0331-X4.jpg

Onward - bridge fans - two for the price of one! For whatever reason, a new bridge is being built here and this temporary structure is providing a dry way for vehicles to get across the river in the meantime...

IMG_0332-X4.jpg

I cross the Klamath River, the bridge guarded by gilded bears...

IMG_0333-X4.jpg

Route 101 then moves inland slightly and becomes a Freeway, with a speed limit of 65mph - enforced by aircraft according to the signs...

IMG_0335-X4.jpg

Even at higher elevations, it's pretty warm...

IMG_0337-X4.jpg

I've used the last of the water from my CamelBack and decide it would be good to stop for lunch soon...

IMG_0340-X4.jpg

At the top of any steep hill, there is an area set aside for trucks to stop so they can check their brakes. If it all goes horribly wrong, there are escape lanes like this one, which end in troughs of deep gravel, that will stop a truck in an emergency...

IMG_0342-X4.jpg

...some of them end in a steep uphill section. Quite exciting, I should think...

IMG_0345-X4.jpg

They have some great signs over here...

I turn off at Trinidad - fill up at $6.31 per gallon for Super
eek7.gif
...

IMG_0350-X4.jpg

...then make my way to the Trinidad Eatery, where I have to wait 15 mins for a table...

IMG_4983-X3.jpg

The lovely Lani tells me about the specials and I select...

...a 'cup' (small bowl) of their Clam Chowder - quite the best I have ever tasted...

IMG_4994-X3.jpg

I ask my dining companions if their dog, Gunner...

IMG_4998-X3.jpg

...would like some of the crackers that came with my soup. They said OK, and Gunner never took his eyes off me again. I swear he was looking at me out of the back of their car as they drove away...
yelrotflmao.gif

I eventually pay the bill (ouch! - but they have a queue here...)...

IMG_0351-X4.jpg

...fill my CamelBack with iced water and set off again...

IMG_0352-X4.jpg

It has clouded over a little whilst I have been stopped and the temperature has dropped slightly, as I rejoin the 101, then pass through Eureka...

IMG_0356-X4.jpg

I overheard at lunch that Google have bought the town of Orick, just north of Trinidad. The whole town... I was going to stop there, but the only café looked closed, so moved on to Trinidad. What does Google want with an entire town?
hmmm.gif

IMG_0358-X4.jpg

It looks as if it's trying to rain over towards the coast, but the rain is evaporating before it hits the ground. This phenomenon is called Virga. So now you know...

IMG_0362-X4.jpg

The 101 here is getting a little monotonous - but I know I'll soon be turning off towards the coast...

IMG_0368-X4.jpg

I decide to avoid the Bigfoot Store...

IMG_5001-X3.jpg

...and pretty soon I'm at the junction at Leggett, where I turn right onto the Route One cut through to the coast. I rode the reciprocal of this route when I was here three years ago, so I know I'm in for a treat. I get off and stretch my legs - it's only about 45 miles to Fort Bragg, my target for tonight, but it'll take me over an hour to get there, because this is a great road...

IMG_0373-X4.jpg

Right - let's go...

IMG_0380-X4.jpg

The road starts with about 20 miles of these twisties, as it climbs and descends a series of hills. I came across four cars - every one pulled into the next lay-by to let me overtake...
thumb2.gif

IMG_0382-X4.jpg

It's a great ride - I'd rate it higher than the much-vaunted 'Tail of the Dragon'. When you finish that you get to a motel. Here, you get...

IMG_0385-X4.jpg

The Pacific Ocean...

IMG_0387-X4.jpg

No contest.

IMG_0392-X4.jpg

It's beautiful - and unexpectedly warm (around 84F)...

IMG_0394-X4.jpg

I'm soon entering Fort Bragg...

Fort%20Bragg%20One-X4.jpg

...and checking into the Super 8 motel. I stayed here three years back and it has been remodelled since. The rooms are great, but like all Super 8's, seem to have a stock of 1980s bedspreads they are using up...
lol8.gif

I walk next door to the filling station and grab a six pack of Corona (the irony) and carry it back to my room. I then go to start the bike to park it outside. It slowly cranks, before bursting into life - but enough to zero the clock. It's like it's telling me not to relax...
lol8.gif

The minx...

Great day

I used to enjoy reading your Colony Inspections and it's great to see you back on the road. Ride safe Mike, I'm in:beerjug:

Thanks Mike this neck of the woods in the north west is on the bucket list .

Er, is it your starter motor??
Great RR and photos, as always. :D

Thursday 8th September 2022

Dear me, the Queen doesn't sound very well... :(

A good night’s sleep. Despite waking at several times during the night, I get up at 0730 feeling refreshed. I get abluted and dressed – today’s forecast is for pretty hot weather and I want to break the back of the journey before the main heat of the day sets in.

I pack all my gear up and load the panniers and roll-bag onto the bike, then decide to ride it over to the filling station across the road. I push the starter and the all-too-familiar slow grind happens. Often, this clears (as it did yesterday evening) and the engine starts. Not on this occasion. I rock the bike backward and forwards in gear to try to move whatever is stuck inside the motor, but to no avail…

I walk back inside my room and have a ponder. It seems to me I have two choices: limp back to Portland; fix the problem.

I decide, after consultation with Jorge, to go for option two. I order a new starter from Beemer Boneyard (specialist BMW bike breakers) – their used starters were not significantly cheaper, so I went the whole hog for $199 – plus a further $115 to get it shipped to me tomorrow…

My god I hope it IS the starter, or I’m going to feel a bit of a nana…

I extend my stay at Fort Bragg by a day and email the hotel I booked tonight to ask them to delay my booking for 24hrs (strictly, the room is non-refundable, but I have found people can be very accommodating when it comes to breakdowns).

I move my kit back inside the room, where the air conditioner is keeping it at a steady 60F, and take off my bike kit…

Bugger…

Queen has died. What a remarkable woman…:(

On the plus side, Beemer Boneyard have just refunded $20 in shipping costs… :p

Always look on the bright side of life ... de dum de dum ...

Enjoying your report, Mike. I've stayed in that Fort Bragg motel, a few years ago. A good bit cheaper then, I expect! :D You're making me very nostalgic for the easy going lifestyle of the Pacific NW! Keep it up!

So, the starter is on its way to me and they will deliver before 1900 tomorrow. Which means I should probably aim at spending another day here.

Around 1500, the fact that I haven't eaten today comes to mind - there is a pizza place literally within the hotel's parking lot, so I give it a go...

Pizza%20Two-X3.jpg

It's completely empty, apart from the owner. In 15 minutes or so he rustles up a very tasty chicken and something else medium...
DukeGirl.gif

Pizza%21-X3.jpg

...and I help myself to geat bucket of lemonade - with a plastic straw - the horror...
yikes.gif

One the way back to my room I meet Don, who's out walking Zöe - a 14yr old Springer spaniel - probably the most placid Springer I've met. Don says she's been like it since she was a pup...

IMG_5017-X3.jpg

Don says "I like your bike - I used to ride a BMW - are they still really reliable?"
yelrotflmao.gif

I tell him, usually - yes...:D

Friday 9th September 2022

I wake at about 0700 to find that the power is out in my room. I turn over and go back to sleep. I wake again just before 0900, to find it is still out. I dress and wander over to the front desk, where David confirms that the whole of Fort Bragg has a power outage and the power company say they expect to have the system back up soon (when do they say anything else?).

I tell David that I’d like to extend a further night, which he assures me won’t be a problem, but asks me to come back over when the power is back, so he can process payment etc.

I have decided to stay because I don’t know what time the starter may arrive, and I’m not keen on doing the swap and then moving on if it’s late afternoon.

As I walk back to my room, I notice an interesting visitor in the car park…

IMG_0404-X4.jpg

It's an Allard Roadster - no clue as to its age...

IMG_0401-X3.jpg

What an extraordinary car to find parked in a motel parking lot...

IMG_0398-X4.jpg

IMG_0403-X3.jpg

looking at the gearshifter it might be a rep

still looks good tho

very bling when the suns out

The power comes back on at about 1000, so I wander over to the front desk and extend my stay. It costs $40 more per night, as this is now the weekend. Hey-ho...
bluduh.gif

Jorge, who is obviously watching the tracking website like a hawk, texts me at 1145 to say the package is marked as delivered. I scoot over to the front desk and there it is...

IMG_5021-X3.jpg

Right - time to get to work...

Starter%20Four-X3.jpg

First job - tank off. You need to do this to disconnect the battery's earth (ground) lead...

IMG_0408-X4.jpg

To the uninitiated, the removal may look complex, but it's made easy by the use of QD (quick detachable) fuel lines and the electrical connection being a single plug. Plus, I have been doing this job for 20 years now...
lol8.gif

IMG_0409-X4.jpg

Next up, disconnect the earth side of the battery - don't forget to drop the 10mm nut and lose sight of it...
fpalm.gif

You are going to be dealing with disconnecting the starter - which has a cable going to it direct from the battery - you don't want to cause a short with a spanner by accident, so don't skip this step. Disconnecting the lead, I mean. Dropping the nut is optional...

IMG_0411-X4.jpg

Remove the starter cover (5mm Allen bolt), not forgetting to detach...

IMG_0425-X4.jpg

...the power lead to the accessory socket. Squeeze the grips together and it will come loose (it can only refit one way round)...

IMG_0410-X3.jpg

...and there's the starter. It's held in place by two Allen headed bolts - one clearly visible in this pic, the other at 180deg to it underneath...

IMG_0412-X4.jpg

The bolt beneath is a difficult one to access. Were I at home, I'd probably use a ratchet and several extensions and work at it from behind the footrest. As it is, the Allen keys I bought at Harbor Freight are about to earn their keep.

Using one of the BMW extension bars, I use the long, ball-ended, arm of the Allen key to get a slightly off-centre grip.

I'm conscious that this isn't the ideal way to do this, as the ball end is weak compared with the square end - but this time it works, and I have the bottom bolt out in about five minutes...
thumb.gif

Before removing the top bolt, I disconnect the power cable from the starter. Although a new nut and washer set has been supplied with the kit, I'll be re-using the current (see what I did there?) ones, as they're perfectly serviceable...

Starter%20Sixteen-X3.jpg

I carefully snip off the cable tie holding the cable to the body of the motor...

Starter%20Eleven-X3.jpg

...using a pair of scissors borrowed from Housekeeping... :D

Starter%20Thirteen-X3.jpg

...and there it is, the bounder. I notice the engagement gear is different on each starter, but they are the same profile...

Starter%20Twelve-X3.jpg

Nothing looks untoward in the clutch housing, no stray bits of metal lying about...
lol8.gif

So, let's put it all back together...

Starter%20Fourteen-X3.jpg

This is a locating pin for the motor. If you don't have one, don't panic, just poke a 4mm Allen key through there as a guide before bolting everything up. I have the new motor in place in about ten minutes, tightening the bottom bolt up the same way I loosened it. I'm going to check tightness when I get to a well-equipped garage, but I'm content that it's tight.

Starter%20Three-X3.jpg

I've just reconnected the battery earth lead when Jeremy the Postman turns up. The truck he drives is Right Hand Drive - so that he can easily access mailboxes without leaving his vehicle. He asks what the snag is and I explain that I'm about to check my fix has worked...

IMG_0423-X3.jpg

I press the starter with crossed fingers and the starter churns into life - Huzzah!
clap.gif

Jeremy gets out of his truck and we share a high-five... :D

IMG_0426-X3.jpg

I then go about methodically replacing and reconnecting everything I have undone to complete the job (including refitting the rear straps on the tank 'bra'
bluduh.gif
), then clear up the tools, wrapping the old motor in the bubble-wrap the replacement arrived in, to be returned to Jorge for refurbishment...

IMG_5025-X3.jpg

Finally, I start the Adv up and give it a quick test ride around the parking lot.

Job done.
ricky.gif

This “free” loan of a bike is costing you a fortune

This could just as easily be happening to my own bike. Jorge’s willingness to loan me his bike year after year is a sign of his generosity and of our friendship. I’ll not tarnish the gesture with petty concerns over costs…
