Need help!!

Bad things happen with my r1100gs, my final drive has gone (big or both bearings) in Newport, Wales, approx 2000 miles form home! If anyone could help with finding used final drive to buy or advice the closest place for repairing, any help would be very appreciated!

More than one Newport in Wales, one near Cardiff and one near Pembroke.

If you're near Cardiff I've read posts that this guy is good:-

If it's the big bearing it's not an expensive job in terms of parts or labour. Almost certainly cheaper to fix than getting a second hand bevel box of unknown quality.

If it can't be repaired, I have an extremely low mileage 1100 rear bevel (abs) it won't be cheap, but it won't be as expensive as the usual breakers. And as i said, it is extremely low mileage.

Did i mention it's low mileage.
 
I have a single bike trailer, but live in Carmarthen which is about an hours drive from Newport, Pembrokeshire. If you can get here to collect it, you can borrow it for a day if you're really in the shit.

Won't your Breakdown Cover take the bike to Mike Pearces' (not Price) place if they can't repair it?
 
I am in Newport between Fishguard and Cardigan so it is closer to Pembroke, but it is 40 miles.

Steptoe, how much do you want for this bevel??
 
Just spoke to Asnore, He's not got direct access to internet and no breakdown cover.

He's going to try and hire a van to take the bike to Mike in Cardiff.

If there is anybody close to the Pemboke area who can help it will be much appreciated.

He's not travelling in a group so he would appreciate help-recommendations.
 
Finally online

I have found an internet in the library here. The situation really looks bad - i can' t find any transport for my bike, i think the best way would be if I could find a second hand final drive, so I could replace it here by myself. Still waiting for the price from Steptoe for low mileage :) final drive, you can also drop a sms with price to 0037126436992.
If anyone else could send or bring the final drive here, I will take care of costs. It could also be the final drive from RT or other bikes with different gear ratio.

The good thing is the bike has broken in beautiful place near the beach :D, but we have only three days left to return to Belgium.

As I mentioned before any help or ideas are welcome and will be very appreciated...

If you decide to get the parts sent directly (possibly by overnight courier) from Steptoe, and you're confident that you can do the repair yourself then everyones happy.

If you can't do the repair yourself and need your bike bought back to Carmarthen temporarily, I could pop down with a trailer later today / tomorrow and bring you all back. There is a campsite just outside town (they have free spaces) while you leave the bike at my place. I can lend you some tools, but don't ask me for any mechanical advice. :o The downside of Carmarthen is that the nearest "beautiful place next to a beach" is 8 miles away, but it is a lot bigger than Newport, Pembs and we do have a mainline train station and a cinema. :D

Alternatively, I could collect your wife / girlfriend and bring her back to the train station in Carmarthen if she needs to get to Belgium before you, and you decide to work on the bike there.

good lad taff, I hope someone can help him out; thats what tossers are for! Im up in sheffield so cant help but its good to see someone local helping.
 
Hi Andris!

IF you have both bearings damaged then probably some damage has been done on the casing too. Mostly it's the big one that goes, if the smaller one goes then things turn nasty.

200 pounds for a complete working bevel box sounds like a bargain to me - I'd say go for it! Safer and less hassle option than to start messing with replacing bearings, shimming and re-measuring to make sure your old one doesn't blow up after few thousand kilometers again. Especially when you're in a hurry.

Take the old broken one with you, replace the bearing(s) at home (then you have time to mess with it) and keep it as a spare :thumb

Newport, Gwent certainly isn't far from your route, but the problem is that he's in Newport, Pembrokeshire which is at least 115 miles out of your way - that's a 230 mile round trip at least. :eek

Touch wood, Asnore will soon have the part and can repair it himself, but he's now got 2 local offers of transport / help if there's still a problem. PW is in touch with him by the sound of it. :thumb2
