I have never had an trouble with Mapsource, plotting routes, downloading or uploading them, saving or exporting tracks, sharing routes or with any Garmin devices until the latest sack of drivel was installed on my PC and Zumo 550.

Being a trusting soul I downloaded and installed the latest mapset on my PC and Zumo. Mapset City Navigator Europe NT 2009.1 Version 6.15.3 - Mapset City Navigator Europe NT 2009.1

It all went swimmingly well - all systems go, no error messages and confirmation from both my PC and zumo that everything was fine - and so it seemed.... Before that is I tried to actually do something useful:

(1) I created a favourite on the Zumo, from coordinates. Quite OK, I can see it on the device. I then tried to upload it to my PC, using the upload button in Mapsource. A bloody disaster and an error message three hundred miles long in gobbly-gook and a request to send it to Garmin (which I have done).

(2) I then tried to download a 150 mile simple route, created on my PC, down to my zumo. Another disaster and another error message, much shorter:

There is not enough space on zumo 550 (unit ID 3437851522). Please free up some free space and try again.

That too may as well be in Swahili.

Useless bunch of turd burglers!

Much less cheesed off now that I have spoken to the lovely Leoni at Garmin (UK).

Really very helpful.

Here were the three problems:

(1) I created a favourite on the Zumo, from coordinates. Quite OK, I can see it on the device. I then tried to upload it to my PC, using the upload button in Mapsource. A bloody disaster and an error message three hundred miles long in gobbly-gook and a request to send it to Garmin (which I have done).

SOLUTION:

In the lengthy error message, the important bit is the error code itself. This is: XML_DOMERRORHANDLER.CPP

The lovely Leoni (who had a great sense of humour) looked this up on her book of errors. Apparently, the Zumo is sending the Favourite to Mapsource on my pc OK. My pc is then trying to create a temp (temporary) file for it, but it can't. My temp files were full, so they needed clearing out.

In XP go to START --> RUN and type %temp% into the box and then hit run. This brings up all the temp files. Select them all and delete them.

Go into the recycle bin and empty that of all the temp files and all the other toot you have accumulated.

Restart the PC.

BINGO! All is good. Mapsouce on the PC can now receive uploads from my Zumo.

There is not enough space on zumo 550 (unit ID 3437851522). Please free up some free space and try again.

SOLUTION:

Maps are getting bigger and bigger, with more and more detail, particularly about the roads' speeds etc. etc. In short, lots of stuff you cannot see but Mapsource and Garmin use.

Despite saying that the new maps are suitable for a zumo 550, the disc space is critical and right on the edge of disaster.

Go into START ---> COMPUTER ---> Right click on the Garmin drive ---> PROPERTIES. It was ramjam full. Time to spring clean.

START ----> COMPUTER ---> Double left click on the Garmin drive brings up two folders. Garmin and Music. The Music folder only holds the pre-loaded songs. Delete it. The Garmin folder holds the brains of the operation and also load of preloaded toot you don't need. Go to Voice file and delete all the voices you do not need (Greek, Hebrew, Spanish etc) There is about 150 of them. Don't forget to leave a couple of English voices!

Then go to the Vehicle file. This holds the choice of silly cursor pictures. Delete all the ones you do not want. Don't forget to leave the one you do want.

This magical process clears some disc space.

Return to Mapsource and send a route to the zumo.

BINGO! It works.

Now the tricky one.

I went to the speed glitch route file http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=175517 and sent to it to Leoni, asking her to have a look at it whilst I was on the phone.

Let her agree that 150 mph is pretty impressive.... particularly when the maximum average speed is set to 65 mph!

Let her agree that it is worthy of some investigation.

She'll get back to me......

===

Still, two out of three ain't bad and my PC still seems to be working, so no need to trouble the Judge.

PS My Zumo, after housekeeping, is showing 1.6gb used, 0.343 spare. I guess the vast bulk of the occupied space is map data? It is certainly not my PC / software expertise!

And she did.....

I have heard back from the United States Engineers who are aware of this issue in the MapSource software. I can confirm that a fix for this will be released shortly in the MapSource Software version 6.15.4. Unfortunately we do not have an estimated date for this release, but it is imminent.

Kind regards,
