Why does Mapsource hate the Stelvio?

Currently winning my attention among the many stupidites of Mapsource is its inability to route properly here.

Trying to make a route on from the Stelvio-Umbrail junctiuon to Bormio required 18 waypoints before it would join up to avoid a 150km diversion via Livigno and Zernez (the whole route is only 25km FFS!). The problem seems to be a series of hairpins in the middle of this section of the pass.

I literally had to put a waypoint on every hairpin to make it complete the route.

Then I try and extend the route to Livigno and thence back to Garmisch, but now it won't let me past the road alongside the Lago di Livigno.:blast:blast:blast

Have you got your preferences set to 'Avoid Seasonal Closures'?

Greg

OK, cool, but why does it insist on a 150 km detour to reach two ends of a route which are less than 1km apart!

I have loaded Stelvio for this years trip and had the same issue (and before) if you zoom in real close it takes a few clicks through the section and then it works, I have had it happen on few routes perhaps there is break in the road on mapsource that isnt visible but the computer thinks there is?????????

Satnavs brilliant but not infalable

Seems easy enough to me, if I guessed you start and end points correctly.

So much so I did it twice, the senond time taking in all the Stelvio as well.

Do you have an 'Avoid seasonal closures' option ticked by chance?

Or, 'Avoid wiggly bits where I might fall off' filter on? :D

Praps cos mapsource is a bit crap............:augie

Still no go.

I've tried various settings of the prefer highways/prefer minor roads and it makes no difference.

A route from the Stelvio/Umbrail junction (N46 32.391 E10 25.981) to Molina (at N46 28.974 E10 21.838) always takes the 150km route via Livigno and Zernaz.

The problem seems to be the series of hairpins at Baracche del Braulio (at N46 30.854 E10 24.171). If I put a waypoint on each bend I can get it to use the correct route

A similar problem occurs at the north east end of the Lago Livigno.

Bizarre.

Thanks for that. When I open your route and recalculate it chooses the 'long way round route':nenau
Even if I change to bicycle or pedestrian it still wants to go the long way round.:nenau
Shorter distance makes no difference either.:nenau

I've run Wapping's route through my copy of Mapsource (6.16.2) for both NT 2008 and 2011.1 maps.

I get the routing problem if the avoidance for date/time closures is ticked, but not otherwise.

In the preferences settings, my avoidances are set to U-Turns and carpool lanes. I am using auto-routing for shorter distances, and the road selection preference is set in the middle. The vehicle setting is for car/motorcycle.

Mapsource 6.15.6 & CN 2011.1, it works fine here. John
If it's working ok for some, but not for others then my best guess is it can't be a Mapsource problem.

If Mapsource was the problem, then it wouldn't work for anyone surely. :nenau

Did you recalculate the route?
I used exactly your settings and Wappings route - all fine until I recalculate and then is uses a 150km detour to avoid the twisty bits.

Interestingly someone else is having the same problem in another area here

Mapsource frequently thinks tight hairpins are U Turns, un-check 'avoid u turns' and it should work.

I had a similar problem with Stelvio.I just kept giving it waypoints till it got so close to its preffered route.

However reading these two topics Stelvio and Tourmalet I altered my preferences all I have left ticked is carpool lanes. It calculated it pretty well I just had to add the D918 waypoint else it took me across country.

But it has done a similar thing just before Aspin :nenau
