The local VMCC had a gathering today at the beach so thought I'd tag along and see some nice bikes, planned yes planned to take the RS but she let me down this morning for the first time.

Had the red ignition light of death, full on and it wasn't budging. So after a short run decided that she wasn't up to the run and returned to the garage to pick up the old faithful (GS).

Some bikes are like old socks, you just can't get rid of them.

Met up with Humvee on the M4 and we plodded down to Pendine to take some pics.

The Commando was like new.

They even allowed some smokey old 2 stokers to attend

Norton looked just great

As I'm sure you all know Pendine has a lot of land spped record history.

This GT550 sounded just right and brought back a lot of memories, I didn't own one but lots of my mates did, 380's, 550's and Kettles.

I used to work in an outdoor centre in pendine (in about 94-95) we used To take kids canoeing off that beach. Good times.

I went on that run in 1970, or was it 1971 :nenau, I was on my Ariel Square Four :drool.

I was a member of the VMCC Somerset Section in those days.

It was the first time I saw a colour TV - in the Hotel, how times change.

Happy days :thumb.

Bob.

Steeped in history

They stopped lsr at pendine in 1927 after perry Thomas was killed when the drive chain from his car babs snapped and it decapitated him. He was trying to beat campbells record, full of flu and not at his best. Seagrave beat cambells record a few weeks later in the 1000hp sunbeam at daytona. First car to top 200mph with an average of 202mph. The car was built in Wolverhampton opposite where I used to work.
Babs was recovered from the sands in the seventies and has now been returned to full running order.
There you go, a brief history of pendine when men were brave beyond belief and health and safety hadn't been invented. That was when great Britain was great.:thumb2
