Zummerzet,
I've acquired a secondhand Catalytic Converter for the 1150.

I want to increase the through flow, at the same time trying to keep the noise levels acceptable so I can keep the Stubby fitted..soooo

I want to open 'er up and see whats what in there, but before I make the first incision with my Sterilised Angle Grinder, I'd like to see the layout of the 'Guts'...

Tried Googling but no luck...:nenau

Anyone got an illustration/photograph of the Cavity that may assist me in this delicate major surgery...?...:D

I cut a 4 x 3 square hole to the top front inlet side of the cat, peeled the lid back and off, inside that is a Y piece that goes to the cat itself, after its gone through the cat it returns to the outside of the y piece and on out through the exit port. I just got a worn = smaller disc in and cut the top off the y piece. Exhaust now comes in - bypasses the cat and goes straight out. = and yep I forgot to take pictures - but- it does work :thumb and its free :thumb

Thanks...

Did you consider taking the Cat components out or did it look like a lot of grief? :nenau

It was as you thought - looked like more trouble . no big deal of a job, done it twice - did me mates - I presume you have done SS welding = have you a TIG set ? HTHY more :thumb

Welding, me... No way should I be let loose with something like that..:D

I would take it down the road and get a local fabricator to re-seal it..

I was hoping that the 'stuff' inside could be culled, to a degree anyway, and save a bit of weight as well as make it sound better in the process...

I'll open the can of developing worms and take it from there....;)

Cat looks like a tin of compressed foil - next to no weight gain - I read somewhere that it contains dodgey chemicals - So dont go grinding it - I dont think it is any louder in noise - it does go quicker - it does respond quicker - you have done it, not bought it . One went on fleabay for at least 45 quid - I forgot to "watch it". and lastly it looks original as you cant see the welding/ cutting HTHY :thumb2

some guy done it on www.advrider.com and posted pics. i'm too lazy to search for it right now.

Yes, I remember reading it and he also took step-by-step photos too. He also said it was 'kin hard work because the stainless is pretty tough stuff to cut!

There was also the guy (his name escapes me :( ), on this site from France, Britanny if my memory hold out  , he put a carbed conversion of an 1100S motor into his R1100GS and he gutted his cat too. :thumb

Someone call a paramedic.......... we got a bleeder!

Step away from the grinder!

The cat is a honeycomb of platinum-coated stainless, so I reckon the only thing you could do is remove a chunk of it to allow unrestricted passage of the exhaust gas.

Al :thumb2

I thank you Number 8.....:thumb

I went in through the top this morning and opened up the internals..as well as creating a hole down the centre of the CAT element...

I think to remove the whole lot would make it too loud to use with the Stubby I have on the bike right now....

I may need to modify my assumptions at a later date...:D

Anyway, it's off for welding back uo now so will be playing around with it when I get it back on Saturday...;) :thumb

So, just to wrap this wee project up....

Thanks to Number8 for his photos, I didn't follow his route as I didn't have access to an angle grinder like his or a workshop, so I took an easier option...I think ..;)

Using my £9.99 special from Aldi....
CatGuts-1.jpg

I cut a 'lid' out of the top of the Cat...
CatGuts-2.jpg

This revealed a layer of fine wire wool..
CatGuts-3.jpg

Beneath which is a sort of grate...
CatGuts-5.jpg

So the Aldi special then cut another section out..
CatGuts-6.jpg

This then showed the 'y' pipes that direct the gas flow into the honeycomb of the Cat...
CatGuts-7.jpg

Once through the honeycomb the gases pass forward within the chamber of the main body of the Cat through a perforated baffle then turn through 180 degrees to the exit pipe, quite convoluted really...

So I cut a hole into the top of the internal 'Y' pipe ....
CatGuts-8.jpg

This was becoming more difficult due to the grinding wheel shrinking and not having a new one handy...

Once the hole was opened up, I got a very big Chisel/Screw Driver and smacked a big hole through the centre of the honeycomb ...

So now the gasses could exit the body of the cat by flowing straight over the top of the 'y' pipes as well as flowing round the back through the honeycomb's new 'Easy-Flow' system :D ...:thumb

All welded up....
CatGuts-9.jpg

Fitted it to the Bike and put the Stubby on...

Another angle...

So...To the Noise..:nenau :augie

At tick-over and light throttle openings, it is very similar to how it was before the surgery....but once you get the grip twisted, it barks nicely...:thumb

Not offensive by any stretch but better than before for sure....Nowhere near as loud as a derestricted 'Y' piece and Can...so will pass the MOT without the Can like last year...:thumb2

Result, well I think so...;) :D

Good post CC and thanks for posting the pics. :clap :clap Food for thought indeed, as I am running a stubby myself. :thumb2

Have you tried fitting a near-side pannier from an RT? If so, are there any complications involved?

What...Like this ....:nenau :D

No problems at all, just need to get a wee bracket for the lug on front of the rt carcass to slot onto...it's different to the standard GS case.

The captive nut that the Can normally uses is ideal...

You will see it at the Gathering..:thumb
