Why I think the adv bars fitted to an 1150 are great if you tour two up.

Loads of folk ask "WHAT ARE THE BEST CRASH BARS FOR MY 1150?" so FYI and FWIW, here is my 5p :thumb2
It has bugger all to do with their protective qualities and no I(we) can't take less stuff ;)

I did a trial pack and shake down run yesterday. It handled great, if a little slowly, and with none of that usual top heavy feel. The bike will be carrying us two bods, our personal kit and camping gear. It's the camping gear(don't forget, for two bods!) that is big and heavy(unless you spend a small countries GDP on new techno kit), two man tent, two roll mats, two sleeping bags, the brew kit and dinky cool box for eggs n bacon. So I have been trying to pack it low and forward for a better CofG which you need for mountain roads( :bounce1 ). Because I have the adv crash bars with the upper spar they act as a great load platform for lashing gear and bringing weight forward and down. The pic below shows one sleeping bag bottom(it didn't get too hot!), brew kit and other general stuff in the mini tank bag thing.

And that is why I think the adv bars are the best for a small tanked 1150 touring two up :thumb2

I hate to tell you this, but better you know it now that half way into your trip.......

The bottom of that bag will be burnt.....it can't be that close to the pot.

I know this 'cos I've got a habit of putting my legs up on my adv bars on long journeys.....and the backs of my trousers where they rest on the pots (or are very close) have melted :)

I'd also warn you that you're cutting out a fair bit of the cooling of the engine by stopping the air flow over the fins on the pots.

I'd suggest that if you really have to do this, you put a spacer in ( a couple of lengths of 2x1 from the front of the bars to the back might do it) to raise the bag off the pot and allow some air flow :D

Aha! :D But what you can't see is the large air gap(20cm'ish) that is between fins and bag, looking from the front, the bag rests only above the rocker cover(no real heat there only above the head fins) as the tank is over the really hot bits(in the pic it look alot closer than it really is, I should have taken a shot to show!) and the protective teflon sheet that is wrapped around the inner bag :) I will be keeping an eye/hand on their temperature and can still move them to the pannier lids if it's a problem. Yesterday I rode slowly on purpose to get them as hot as possible and it was fine :thumb
Still, it may all go tits up and we'll have a solid lump of plastic instead of a something to sleep in after the first day, and you can say "Toldja so!" :D Gotta try these things! Ideally I will make up a two skin heat shield to fit but I've run outa time for this trip :)

I'd pay a bit more attention to the lashings as well though.....a few years ago I followed Lucy through the alps and her Aerostich tank panniers kept flapping all over the damn place in quite a spectacular fashion....there's an awful lot of pressure on them to lift away from the bike and they're right out in the airstream.....make sure you do at least a few miles at high speed for testing before you set off, won'cha ;)

Yup, tent one side roll mats the other. It's going to limit lean a bit so I've strapped some beer cans to it as an audible early warning system. So, with any luck I'll be melting me sleeping bags and abrading away me tent and mats. All in the name of GSer experimentation and progress eh!? :D

Yer gonna be on your arse faster than a very fast thing with stuff that size strapped under the pannier. Trust me on this one...

PS here's two more little storage thingies.....both Tuareg bags from Heine Gericke, about 8 quid a pop....The one by the frame and pannier mounts doesn't foul the panniers at all when they're on, and Rosie didn't even know it was there until i went to it to get a lock and strap out,so it's unobtrusive.
The one on the bars is good for sunglasses/wipes/things you need immediately, and the peli box is great for Fags/lighters or, as I don't smoke anymore, gum ,credit card for tolls, a few coins and a moby (case is watertight)

And yes, I know, that rear TKC needs changing :)

All the best with trying it but from my recent expirience as my own testpilot/ stuntman I would advise against it.

I had a look at the picture and it just seems too much stuff, only benifit I can think of I'm not riding it.

Need some action pictures.... I want to see that baby fly just cos I'm like that....
