My BuMW Nav III has a problem.

It is mounted on my 1200GSA, in its BuMW cradle, on a Mottorad Concepts mount, on the upper screen support. It has always vibrated a bit and the vibrations seem to have caught up with it, after 20,000 miles.

The metal hasp, into which the 'lock' engages, has worn, meaning that the lock cannot engage properly. It has now fallen out twice and is now held in with that trusty old medium, gaffer tape.

The hasp itself is easy enough to take out. Just one posidrive screw (in the picture, held in with what apears to be a small smearing of blue threadlock (so I guess BuMW know it vibrates?) and two much smaller posidrive screws behind. Undo them and off comes the hasp, easy.

Not sure if this has happened to anyone else?

Whilst the gaffer tape does add a certain 'well worn' look to the GSA, it's not particularly satisfactory.

I will contact BuMW and Garmin (its a rebranded Garmin product after all) to see if I can get my hands on 50p worth of new metal hasp.

Also got the Nav 3 in the BM cardle but onto the screen cross bar mount :) works well apart from the vibration when the engine's idling. Guess I'll have a similar problem at some time. What I've noticed is that the solidity of the GPS in the cradle is affected by how tight the screws are :(

When I get it fixed I am going to glue a thin strip of rubber to pack out the gap between the mount and the GPS device.

The down side of this cunning plan is that the insides of the device will probably vibrate themselves into a liquid....but we shall see.

First task 50p of hasp.

Mine has shown exactly the same type of wear but hasn't got so bad as to let the GPS unit fall from the cradle...yet.

I've tried to eliminate the movement between the cradle and the unit by packing it out with foam strips. This has worked and the wear hasn't worsened.

I checked with my BMW dealer to see if the worn part is available as a spare and it isn't.:(

For now it seems to be working, but I'll be interested if you have any joy with Garmin in sourcing a replacement part.

Just a thought - since the Nav III is still less than 2 years old, won't it be covered under the BMW 2 yr warantee? Mine was 2nd hand so I probably wouldn't be able to claim.

Have spoken to Garmin. They are calling me back.

It struck me, too, that the device should still be covered by the warranty. I have spoken to BuMW and will be dropping by Battersea to see what they can do.

I guess that the 'blade' of the lock (the part that pushes down to engage with the device) is made of a harder metal than the hasp, hence the wear. The 'blade' shows no sign of wear at all.

Spoke to Garmin.

As a rule Garmin do not dispatch parts, prefering to service the devices themselves. However, as a service, having found an old Nav III sitting around, they have agreed to send me the small metal hasp in the post. Thereby saving everyone a lot of bother.

Still going to see BuMW as have a feeling that this wearing and vibration problem is not unique.

Wapping,
Was there a part number or part name or do they seem to know what you were on about when you started talking about hasps? Anything to make it easier for me to get hold of one.

Thanks.

No part number that I am aware of.

I spoke to the chap at Garmin, who had a Nav III in his hands. He could see the piece I was talking about.

I got the real impression that Garmin are not keen on supplying parts.

Result! I suppose if you don't ask, you don't get!!

In the same vein - any chance of having the replacement hasp they sent you?

Thanks

Dave,

Sorry. I knew that would happen. I had already promised it to a mate of mine whose Nav III device is similarly worn.

Can you try the BuMW warranty route too? I think the Nav III came out less than two years ago, so should be covered?

Thanks Wapping - no worries.

I got mine second hand but, as you say, the model is less than two years old so I would hope the warranty will be transfered. I'll give my dealer a try. Failing that, I only live 5 minutes from Garmin UK so I might just pop in and show them the unit.

I also had a 2nd hand unit, with the original sale receipt :) and had no problems with a warranty claim. But then Garmin don't seem to have the TomTom customer care logic.

I had problems with the Garmin bike mount on my 2720. Although the BMW mount has extra buttons I think the mounting system is the same.

I found it awkward to get to the tiny locking screw - then the screw socket started rounding off making it even harder. Finally the sat nav fell off on Stelvio Pass. It was probably my fault, maybe I did not tighten the screw sufficiently but could no longer trust the mount so dropped into Touratech on the way home and bought one of their mounts. Its been on the bike for s year now and is perfect. Quick and easy to fit the satnav, no need to lock it (although Touratech recommend you do) and total confidence it won't come off. The little fitted stylus is useful as well. The only downside is it looks a bit crap but I prefer function and security to good looks.

I guess if one of these was used with a BMW satnav all you would lose is the extra buttons - and I have never found a need for thos anyway.

Incidentally. although the drop only damaged the case of the satnav. I phoned Garmin to check what it would cost to repair but they just changed it for a new one, free of charge within three days of me sending it back.

Brand new Nav III+ in my mits this afternoon.

Dropped the old one off at lunchtime Saturday, received confiramtion of a full warranty replacement at about 11o'clock, this morning.

Good service from BuMW Park Lane (Battersea).

Battersea tell me they have lodged the fault with BuMW head office as well.
