Been trying the Olympia Phantom suit and their Hi Viz vest out for the last few days, been a bit posted about the Olympia Phantom recently so thought those interested might appreciate some pictures and details even though it means opening myself up to ridicule!! :blast

Ok so what exactly is the Olympia Phantom? Well it's a one piece biking suit which is fully waterproof, comes complete with full integrated CE approved armour and is designed to be worn over your street clothes for easy removal at journeys end.

The Phantom like it's rival the Aerostitch is only avilable in the States, unlike the Aerostitch it is marketed through dealers rather than only from the company and made under license in China which is possible the main reasomn for the difference in price, the Phantom sells for $449 compared to $747 for a Stitch to ehich you have to add another $90 for the optional back and hip armour which comes as standard with the Phantom.

The Phantom outer shell constructed in coated 500 and 2000 denier Dupont Cordura with a waterproof/breathable membrane to add double waterproof protection.

It has a Thermolite insulated jump suit liner for those colder days (most of the year in the Uk then :D) which is attached to the inside of the suit and having tried it over the last few days wearing just a pair of shorts and a tee shirt it does do its job.

Getting it on is not aas simple as the Stitch as it does not use a full length zip but one on each leg and one from the neck down to the groinal area all of which have velco flaps to make them waterproof.

8 storage pockets give loads of space for your bits and bobs and it even has a larger pocket on the back which is alos waterproof but as yet I can't think of what to put in it as it's not easy to get at when your wearing the suit.

Fold up pocket flaps with lock down slide buckle straps create adjustable air flow and shoulder to forearm venting system creates maximum airflow for those hot summer trips.

The Hi-Viz vest which seels for $69 is made from the same material and has yet more pockets and straps for adjustment to minimize flapping.

Both items are vey well made and have some useful features.

Even bringing a duit over from the States with import duties and vat your looking at a cost of just under £350 so it's got to be something worth considering.

Is the Phantom better than a Stitch? Can't say to be honest but it's got to something to look at.:thumb

Thanks, Thunder! :thumb

I've been seriously considering the Phantom as I'd really like a good-quality one-piece suit that won't require as much coin as 'stich. Yours is the first post I've seen that really gives a nice overview of the suit and the reflective vest. Thanks!

And I'm glad I got to see the pewter colour; it's much better looking in your pics than the ones on the Olympia pages. Looks like much more reasonable an option now.

Cheers!

Had a question about what the 2 straps were for and if they had any sexual overtones Also what the flap on the right side of the picture was for.

The pockets are waterproof but also double as additional venting for the summer, you open them and then use the straps to keep them open.

AS for the flap, I had to go and check it out as I'd not noticed it before, it's another full length pocket.

Very thorough and interesting post Roger and certainly think I'll need to be looking in that direction before long. Been away Donegal and Sligo way over the last few weeks and early morning starts and dark night returns I'm starting to feel the cold air, thankfully weather, thus far has been on our side. Good job, health to wear, cheers

The million Q. of course is ; is it better/as god as a Stich? :nenau

Roger - does the material feel as heavy duty as the Stich?

That indeed is the question and its a very difficult one to answer but having had a Stitch and Which was slightly too short in the leg for me I was so impressed with the ability to pull it on and off quickly I stopped using my other gear altogether and decided to order one in my proper size.

When I did I found that even though I wanted a standard size with no alterations I was told it would take 6 weeks to make one so I decided to try the Phantom, I'd read about it and heard good reports but was still buying blind having never seen one.

Now I've tried it I would personally say it's as good as a Stitch and in some areas better (cost has to be the big one) but each suit has it's advantages.

The Stitch is faster to get on and off, the Phantom takes about a minute more than the Stitch, having said that I'm still getting used to it and the very things that take longer are related to the areas which some people complain about with the Stitch namely leaky zips particularly round the crotch.

The inner suit also adds to the time factor as it means additional zips, but for those living in more temperate climates it also handles another weakness of the Stitch in the area of warmth.

When it comes to the other extreme of summer riding I'd say the Phantom has the advantage as it has a lot more ventilation and the getting on and off times will reduce as the inner suit will not be needed.

The Stitch has more sizing options and colour choices compared to the Phantom plus they can alter it for those who need some customization, the Phantom is made more as an off the peg item for sale through retailers.

As for material they both use 500 cordura for the main body of the suit and the Phantom uses 2000 cordura for the wear areas compared to 1500 on the Stitch.

All I can really say is if the Stich had been available when I ordered it I'd not have gone with the Phantom, but now I have I'm glad I did. :thumb

my viz vest arrived this morning from Bobs BMW - cheers for the tip fella. it is very well made, excellent!

proper cordura, pockets, zips and reinforced seams. got lots of bits to "tighten" and adjust the fit. its better made than some of my jackets...

30 quids of worth of viz vest in the UK is a piece of yellow plastic, this is worlds apart, US Army approved!

rip-off Britain yet again, god bless America! :)

Cheers for the info (and may I say you make a lovely model) :thumb2

Out of interest did you go for the yellow or red?

If the red can you post a picture in daylight?

I'm still deliberating

Maybe if there were a few more colour options I'd be tempted but as I have seasonal insurance here a 1month Stich wait is no big deal as I won't be on the road again until March :(

It's good to hear a comparison from someone who has owned a stich.

I like the inner suit. But wonder would it still be as warm as my stich with my heated fleece.

Look forward to an update when it's got a few more miles on it.

thanks Roger :thumb2

It does look pretty smart :thumb2

(It'd look soooooo much better with Ms Cheeks in it though ;) )

Is that a full sized map pocket in the same place as the 'Stitch has it??

I suspect from what you say that this might be a good alternative as a touring suit, and I do like the adjustments to tighten things up and stop it flapping...the 'stitch does make us larger gentlemen look like sacks of shit even if they are supremely comfy and practical ;)

:beerjug:

Does not come with the clear type map pockets like the stitch, which pocket do you mean exactly Bill?

If it's to the left side chest area then the answers yes.

Yup, that's the one I was looking at ....very useful if you like a good old traditional map :thumb2

Cheers :)

Talking with another GSer the other weekend and I think there was mention of BMW doing a 'Stitch-a-like' possible next year.

Anyone heard that ???
