Looking to do a first oil change on the 1100 I resently purchased, normal question what would you old hands surgest is the best to replace it with?.

Already purchased the new filter and removal tool from Nippy,s.

at the same time I thought I would replace the iol in the final drive unit.

all information most welcome.

I was just going to post.:popcorn

But the recieved wisdom seems to be a good oil that starts at 5wto20w and finishes at 50w NOT 40w (lots of debate on mineral v's synthetic v's old chip fat) spec in the Manual is API sf,sg,or sh and CD CE or better. Gearbox oil spec is API Class GL 5 SAE90.

Do a search on it and you'll get a feel for the type of debate this question normally starts.

To save you countless hours just bung semi synthetic 10W 40 in it ... I've spent too many hours searching and you're only here once ;)

I use 10W 40 Vauxhall Semi Synthetic

Motorrad Central (East) put Putoline Formula V 20w/50 Semi-synth in my 2004 1150GSA.

I have just replaced it with Silkolene 15w/50 fully synth when doing the 'interim' oil change after a 4,600 mile trip to Morocco. I changed the oil and air filters as well (and changed the oil in the gearbox and bevel drive using EP90).

I have used Castrol GPS (semi-synthetic 10W40 I think) - about £20 from Halfords, for last 20 thousand miles (according to my Owners Handbook BMW recommend Castrol oils but sure doesn't matter which one you use as long as keep an eye on level and change reguarly). Changed oil before 5,500 mile trip to Morocco in the sumer and bike used about 750ml in all that time.

Used fully synthetic oil in my K1200RS once and ended up with leaking oil seals, new clutch, £800 bill - may be coincidence but have tended to avoid since then as have heard similar stories about synthetic oils.

Don't use a motorcycle oil - Motor cycle specific oil is for use on bikes with a wet clutch, and the gearbox running in the same oil.

BMW are a dry clutch, with seperate gearbox oil. So car engine oil is better.
