Loz, JamesM, Desert Rat and myself left Chieveley services around 12.15, following JamesM down the A34 to the first Byway on our list for today, the "Ox Drove" just North of Burghclere.

The Eastern end of the "Ox Drove" - not so much of a ford, more of a large puddle :)

A quick visit to the Byway South of Burghclere then a few miles down and a mile up the A34 to join the Wayfarer's Walk at the De Havilland memorial, quite deep muddy ruts (a common theme of the afternoon) leading up a hill, where JamesM decided to have a bit of lie down :augie

We skipped the "ruts of doom" and sent Loz down on his own - he reported it wasn't too bad.

<a href="http://www.zooomr.com/photos/clive/4252101/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.zooomr.com/images/4252101_a6e7e06fed_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="SU420581" /></a>

Yeah, right, that's probably why a TRO start Monday for 6 months from SU430575 to SU410591

<a href="http://www.zooomr.com/photos/clive/4252090/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.zooomr.com/images/4252090_01fe3fb051_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="SU430575" /></a>

The Wayfarer's from Walbury Hill to Woodcote Road. I didn't think I had done the first part of this, but Loz reminded me Bakerman took us up this track for a recce a couple of Hograosts ago. It was in the dark, which was probably why I didn't remember it :)

I was sloppy third's at this stage

<a href="http://www.zooomr.com/photos/clive/4252129/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.zooomr.com/images/4252129_859b7f1c66_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="SU348619a" /></a>

Which, I guess, is better than sloppy fourth's ;)

<a href="http://www.zooomr.com/photos/clive/4252138/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.zooomr.com/images/4252138_a041793209_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="SU348619b" /></a>

A short stretch of non-ruts - hooray!

<a href="http://www.zooomr.com/photos/clive/4252143/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.zooomr.com/images/4252143_95d6b1dbc1_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="SU348619c" /></a>

<a href="http://www.zooomr.com/photos/clive/4252146/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.zooomr.com/images/4252146_04831d8940_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="SU348619d" /></a>

At least we had firm ground underneath

<a href="http://www.zooomr.com/photos/clive/4252158/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.zooomr.com/images/4252158_448ec31307_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="SU348619f" /></a>

The end of the section

<a href="http://www.zooomr.com/photos/clive/4252163/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.zooomr.com/images/4252163_0b88a16146_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="SU332613" /></a>

While most were content to use the rutted part, someone decided the bit next to the fence was easier.

Probably, until you hit the hidden fence posts :D

<a href="http://www.zooomr.com/photos/clive/4252246/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.zooomr.com/images/4252246_802bdda098_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="SU332613a" /></a>

Heave...

<a href="http://www.zooomr.com/photos/clive/4252161/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.zooomr.com/images/4252161_50301b08db_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="SU332613b" /></a>

I'd had my "two hours worth" at this stage, so we headed for home.

Desert Rat reminding us why you shouldn't park on the side stand downhill, when investigating a lack of brakes :D

<a href="http://www.zooomr.com/photos/clive/4252165/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.zooomr.com/images/4252165_dd5bed95b5_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="DSC00549" /></a>

Back in Reading, we had time for a pint though

<a href="http://www.zooomr.com/photos/clive/4252166/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.zooomr.com/images/4252166_890b394baa_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="DSC00550" /></a>

A good afternoon out, just what I needed. Thanks for joining me chaps :thumb2

Brilliant pics of fantastic lanes - looks like you had loads of fun! :clap

Couldn't make it in the end, there was just too much on my list (will spend the next three weekends on the trails, so had to fulfil a few other duties first... :()

Looks like I missed a great couple of hours riding.
That'll teach me to be off guard & strip the bike down for a spring fettle and miss out on a localish ride.

Cheers for the pics. Particularly like the 'let's laugh at the post basher' shot:thumb2

Excellent pics, I bloody hate big muddy ruts:aidan

A top afternoon out, lots of fun. Cheers Clive for organising, Simon for helping to pick my bike up :D, and loz for making it all look so damned easy...
Till next time.

James
