I travel a fair bit with my job so only really get the chance to take the bike to work maybe once or twice a week. This morning wheeled the bike out of the garage and fired it up, engine ran for about 5 seconds then died, starter motor churning away but wouldn't even fire after that, lot's of messing around, turning it off waiting 5 minutes, trying again, etc, turning the air blue, then ditched the bike and trundled off to work in my wifes car ! Gutted.

The bike is only recently run in, a '57 Adventure (one of the faster White ones :augie ).

Mileage only up to about 1,100 ran perfectly up until the last time I used it when it stalled twice on the way home in low gears, took a bit to restart it, engine off wait for 5 minutes try again. I took it out later again the same night and it was absolutely fine, so I chalked it up to one of those things, it was a very cold day.

The only thing that has happened between, running great, and running like my first car, was a full tank of V-Power Unleaded from the local Shell garage, don't usually go for V-Power one but decided to give it a whirl.......coincidence ? Ideas ?

Realise I can call BMW's rescue squad, but this seems like it should be something obvious :nenau

Thanks
Mike

Fuel pump relay. They all do that eventually. The BMW recovery guy will be carrying spares as they fail all the time

EWS reader coil around the ignition barrel? :nenau Never had it but seems to be the other common failure. Not sure if when it fails, it brings on an EWS light though. HTH

Hi, No EWS warning, so fuel pump relay seems the best bet, it did feel like a fuelling issue. Bit off having a problem like that on a 1,000 mile, nearly new, not exactly cheap bike :thedummy

I'll check it out when I get home, I hope the bmw guy does carry spares or it will be recovered to Southport SuperBikes (about an hour away), the last time I used the BMW emergency service (for my old f650 Dakar) the guy that came out was a car mechanic, and by his own admission, not much help !

Thanks for the info

Mike

Can't be EWS. (1) You will get a warning on the display (2) If the EWS fails it's totally dead and won't even turn over.

If nothing else you're about to learn the BMW's round-the-world bike can only be repaired by BMW or a dealer. Sadly the days when you could clean the points, drain water out of the carb, etc have gone.

Mine did the same thing. The TPS was broken...Does it start if you have half throttle?

Fault finder

Buy a GS-911 diagnostic tester from http://www.hex.co.za/gs911/index.html
You plug it in to the onboard diagnostic plug underneath the seat, connect to your laptop through usb port or bluetooth phone depending on what version you purchase.
using the supplied software the fault will be displayed on screen telling you exactly what is at fault and causing your problem.
These units are very reasonably priced and will save you many headaches in the future like you are experiencing now.:nenau

If you can be bothered (cos of the warranty), you can bypass the fuel pump, look here. Others on ADV rider have had strange starting problems with the sidestand switch (try with the stand up :nenau), and others have had the bike run out of fuel despite what the gauge says. Hope you get sorted.

Hi, decided that a bike with barely more than a thousand miles on it needed to be looked at, so I called BMW Assist, 50 minutes later they turned up, pretty good, but had no parts with him, not so good :blast. Awaiting recovery vehicle !

Like the look of that diagnostic gadget, another one for the shopping list :thumb

Thanks all
