starter motors

hello i have a valeo and the magnets have fallen off :thedummy

and wont let it work anymore :blast

can anyone tell me what other starters fit and also what cars i can get them off (cash short so will see if i can get one from a local breakers) one of the magnets has broken in two would it be worth drilling and taping or will i have trouble with the broken magnet. my car is not working at the mo either (building new engine) so i could do with a reasonably quick and inexpensive repair. if anyone has any suggestions

last time i looked new valeos were about £130. quick but not cheap.

you can buy new cases with magnets fitted. cheaper, but probably not quick.

ring motorworks etc. and see if they have any s/h starters?

If you really want to stay with a Valeo starter motor rather than the heavier but trouble free Bosch, you'll need a Valeo D6RA15. These were fitted to small Citroens and Peugeots. They are not a straight swop and you will have to swop over the ends. They was a very thorough article in 'The Journal' all about using car-type Valeos, some months ago.

Once the magnets have come loose and broken, I think you really have to go to a replacement. I've heard of people re-glueing magnets in using a tougher epoxy adhesive which can cope with the hostile temperatures but never tried it. I've also heard of people who drill through the casing into the magnets but again, I don't know how successful that is.

Very.
Erich Demant modified my Valeo this way. Drilled tapped & bolted. Sorted.
Been to deserts and 46c heat and all OK.

The whole problem with a Valeo is that they are designed for cars and therefore sit OUTSIDE the motor in the relatively cool air so the glue is not baked like it is INSIDE a BMW motor.

. i think i may try to fix mine failing that the d6ra appears in many vauxhauls, citroens, renults, peugot and even mitibushis but it would seem to be the version that spins the other direction but all the casings are the same i have no doubt that i will find one locally if my repair is unsuccessful.

If it goes the wrong way any auto electricain should be able to reverse it
without too much trouble.

I had mine repaired at a local auto electrician. Because this starter motor is so common he carried replacement casings on the shelf. It was repaired in 30 minutes for £15.

first i glued the old magnets back together (have you ever tried gluing opersite pole magnets together :eek

you need a rapid cure epoxy) then i drilled the starter casing with enough holes so each section of magnet could be screwewd into place. after gluing the magnets back into the casing i found my second problem, driling magnets! :blast

no dril press and crap drill bits :blast

at that point i thought i would see if the glue would work on its own :augie

then i found the first problem one of the glued magnets was nolonger the right shape and jammed the armature so after afew :beer:

i

and decided to go to the scrappy after work. I wandered around for half an hour and found a suitable donor in a 1.2 corsa. they can also be found in peugots, citroens and a few others. there are a few diferent d6ra valeo starters the motor and solenoid are interchangeable with the airhead starter so any of them will do. then all you have to do is swap the motor bit over. in all it cost £20, £5 for the glue :thedummy

and £15 for the starter :thumb2

only one thing left to do, see how long it lasts :rob
