help: mountain bike rack?

few years back I saw someone who had made a rack for the back of his GS to carry his MTB, I've done a search here but can only find one guy from the US who's done it, his rack has the bike hanging way to far out the back and I'm not to keen on that; the one I saw had the bike on long ways with both wheels out, they sat either side on top of the panniers. I've done a search on Adv riders as well, but cant see anything... Any idea's?
 
Off the top of my head I think his name is Ricardo Kuhn (so something similar).

Yes, his site is down or not available.. but his one has the bike too far out the back.. thanks all the same, hope someone see's this over the weekend and can help out.. need to get to France with the bike, and the MTB! time to get the pen and paper out I guess.

Sounds like a damed good idea to me.I have been searching and found pictures on this site but i still think it would be illegal in the uk (This is by Ricardo at motomacondo)

Hi Eggchaser, I've built the rack for my bike, used some checker plate that the local metal shop bent to shape for me and some threaded bar, straps etc.. if you let me have your e-mail address I'll send you some pictures.

Thx FW190 but I only added the link as a possible solution, although I do ride a Mountain bike, not really considering transporting it on my Motorcycle, and suspect the UK Police might take a dim view anyone.

OK mate, just a thought, why do you think its against the law? the Johnnyrack thing looks downright horrible! all that bike over the back, mine sits the front fork just behind riders seat , both wheels out and its not much more than the rear swing arm (of the MTB) that is beyond the rear light, I seem to remember a guy who used to turn up to road races in the UK with his race bike on his mo-bike (an old airhead GS) I dont remember the plod being at all concerned. Mind you, I have yet to run the gauntlett of the Italian and French police next week! Check the ones out below, mine is very similar to the first one.. cheers

I will, I know there are quite a few guys on here into their MTB's. Mine is almost the same as the one on the Cagiva, not quite as flash though! I like the small box he made that sits below the downtube! mine keeps the GS rack in place and bolts on below it, I have used a large bolt that drops into the hole for the passenger seat lock, then used the bolt that holds the rack in place, its very secure, I went out for a 50 mile ride round the mountain roads here and to be honest, you cant notice the bike on the back at all. all up weight of bike and the rack is 24lbs, about 10 kilo's.

and one from the front.. I will post some of it off the bike when time allows, its pretty simple, guys at the workshop up the road bent it to shape and I found the rest of the bits..
 
That's neat

BTW not sure it is against the law - just there are a lot of police out there that take an interest in anything unusual - which at best might just cause a stop and chat and at worse might mean you have to do a load of research to find out if the penalty you just received is valid or not.

Most riders top boxes do stick out behind the rear light - although probably have rear relectors marking the rear end.

stick a red/yellow rag on the rear lugs:thumb2 Cant see the Police in either France or Italy getting upset, these are huge cycling nations and i know in Italy cyclists ignore traffic lights so that should not be a prob. France well i am not sure but as i said they might stop you out of curiosity
