So were they still making 1100,s in parallel with 1150,s? mine is an early 1150, registerred 09.09.1999:thumb2

mine was first registered March 2000.

Its a strange thing.. I've read elsewhere that the last 1100 rolled out of spandau in august 1999 - but the VIN number search thingy says 12/99

so who knows??

I think there was a period of overlap, mine was I think a launch bike, very early in the run yours must have been the absolute last of the line, when they stopped building 1150 ADV,s (we did not get the SE,s or BumbleBee,s only Silver) they found some new Bumble Bee ones in or en route to Australia and redirected them here, only non silver ones we got here, also very late in the series.

Just to add.. it was brought into the UK as a special order/import - direct from germany brand new. and then converted before sale. MPH clocks - headlamp. The only clue to this was that it still had a german exhaust with CAT - I discovered the history after purchase - tracked down the original buyer. he wanted an 1100 - rather than the then new and largely unkown/untried 1150.

Some of the last 1100 GS's to roll off the production line were the limited edition Granada Dakar models. Only 200 were produced of which 37 were destined for the UK.

Mine was registered on 1st July 1999, the 1150 GS was available 3 weeks later for £8,250, my 1100 was £9,070 :blast

that answers another little mistery - the paint code on the fuse box is for the silver/yellow - whereas the bike itself is black. (but not for much longer)

btw - i paid i think £9,300 for my first 1100 in 1997. Which would I imagine in todays money make it a hell of a lot pricier than the top spec 1200.

Mine was a Mandarin Yellow, but previous owner hit a car, it was then rebuilt "black" since no black / yellow GSA,s were imported here it is a bit different.

just had a look on me v5 doc, 01/04/00 first reg, but then again it was first bought in Germany , and then brought back here in 02 where dvla gave it a T reg.

should start a registry of these Granada Dakar models - the numbers involved make the SE 1150 look common as muck!!!

So.... were do the 850GSs fit in to this as I have a yellow and silver 850, looks identical to an 1100 dakar, first registered 1st Aug 2000.
Were the 850s a limited edition like the 1100s or were they a limited edition because at the time no one wanted them:nenau

forgot to include the picy

Seamaster,

The R850GS was only imported to the UK for two years. All the ones I've seen are either silver and yellow (i.e. the Dakar colour scheme - like mine) or red and are are mostly W registered. They often have neither ABS nor a RID and IMHO are a lot better off without them. I had mine new in April 2000, but it was made in 1999. If I remember correctly the date that is marked in each rocker cover is December 1999. (FWIW my early '96 RS was made in late 1995 according to the engine number and the date stamped in the rocker covers). Anyway, when I bought my 850 the 1150 had just been launched, but they were a sell-out and I couldn't get an 1100, which is why I had the 850. According to the supplying dealer (Hughenden M40) he had to pay extra for his personal T reg 1100 in the Dakar colours, but my 850 was the same price as the red one he had in stock. One of the books I have on BMWs mentions that the 850 was made to use up stocks of 1100 frames etc when the 1100 was replaced by the 1150 and that only 200 were imported. They are quite rare in the UK so this seems probable. They were available at the same time as the 1150 though this is probably because they were slow sellers and everyone wanted an 1150. Personally I like the 850; it's not much slower than the 1100 'cos it's much lower geared, though it is a bit thirstier. It's a bit different too..........

:)

I thought the 850 was produced basically as an easily restricted variation - easily restricted to 25Kw (33bhp)

Also.. they did make them in black - I've seen a few on German Ebay.

Its probable too that many didn't have RID and ABS due to the cost. from memory it was £600 for the RID and £1100 for the ABS - and as many would have been ordered from the factory - the option was there to choose which if any extras the buyer wanted.
