Been tempted by the HP2 for sometime now but without any reasonable delivery times i have held back and now see in this weeks comic that the S1000RR is available for this summer, so what do you reckon, HP2 vs S1000? Discuss!

I've seen both the race versions up close at endurance races and spoke to the riders of both. They are generally less than complimentary about the HP2 Sport. It is significantly slower than a 1000cc four cylinder bike and the handling is limited by the boxer engine. I asked Stefan Mertens if he grounds out the cylinder heads and he replied "Oh yes, on EVERY corner". They only did well in Endurance due to their superior fuel ranges. However, they are a beautiful bike and will always be very rare and exotic. Quality of components is first class.

The S1000RR is very similar to 09 R1 (we've been working on 09 R1 for last month). Similar power output of 173 bhp and similar weight. On paper it is the "better" bike than HP2 as it will lap faster and handle better. For the first six months it will be the latest fashion but after that it may be just another 1000cc four.

I've postoned my decision to change my R1 for S1000RR and will now wait until next year to see how it fairs. I still don't believe MCN that it will be priced around £11,000. My guess is at least £12,500 but I would love to be wrong.

The bikes are chalk and cheese really. S1000RR is built to take fight to Japs whereas HP2 Sport is much more of niche market like a Ducati. It will be very interesting to see how second hand values of S1000RR fair in longer term as Jap 1000cc sports depreciate rapidly after the first year. HP2 Sports will hold their value long term due to rareity.

Thanks Sid, a well thought out and balanced view that makes a lot of sense. I think i will will follow my heart and go for the HP2, it will be plenty quick enough for me and indeed may stop me getting in to trouble, or at least less trouble anyway! I agree the components of the HP are top notch and if your right about residuals and i think you are then thats the package for me!

I agree, you simply will not have the same sense of occasion riding a mass produced; plastic faired; 4 cylinder 'normal' superbike compared to the HP2 Sport. Neither version of the S1000RR will be anywhere near as special as the HP2, and I guess that's reflected in their lower price.

However, that doesn't stop me hoping BMW will change their minds and build me a HP4 Sport after all!

great read sid and very fare. i was talking to a bee em guy at the nec show he was telling me the new four cylinder is the same size and looks very much like the r6 in its height and looks. a good few people have there name down and they will sell like hot cakes if they do well in wsb.
it will be this years bike to have i think .. me i will stick with the hp2, pure sex on wheels

If the brand new to market S1000RR has half of the problems that were associated with the K12s at launch then you will possibly be glad that you bought the more proven HP2. :nenau

Ok, decision made, its a HP2 Sport, next question is hw do i get my hands on one? Have many second hand ones come on the market and if so at what price? I saw one on ebay a few weeks ago, which dispaeared before the end of the auction but seem to remember it had got up around the £13k mark anyway! So if its a new one anyone has anyone got the latest script on delivery? Or indeed anyone need me to take over their order?????

I must be honest my initial thought was very overpriced but having sat on it and looking at the various little bits and pieces will buy this in a second........if I ever had that much money to spend on a 2nd bike :D

This was the demo at SLM in Hertford

Great thread and balanced arguments…:thumb

I’ve been lucky enough to have owned my HP2 Sport for almost a year now. It truly is a superb and totally unique sports motorcycle, and probably the best sports bike I’ve ever ridden/owned (apart from the useless mirrors). Yes it might not be the fastest bike in a straight line and yes my mates pass me like I’m parked when I’m maxed out at 165mph (not in the UK of course officer:augie). But when the roads get twisty the roles are reversed and they struggle to stay with me.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love mega powerful inline four superbikes, and when BMW first announced the new S1000R, I thought about changing……for about a nano second that is!!

The S1000R will be an excellent sports bike and able to compete head to head on road and track, with the very best bikes from Japan. However, it has lost its identity. It might just as well be a Fireblade/R1/GSXR/ZX10R…with a BMW badge on the tank.:blast

Hello Yonkyo - Thoroughly agree with all you say. I too, really love mine. I would love to own both (but that's financaly impossible). However good the 1000 is I would still rather keep the HP2 sport as it's so unique and as fast as I need on a public road.:Motomartin

BM Convert - Bahnstormer at Alton had a new one in January - may still have it! I think they have BMW's demo machine at the moment. Certainly did a week or so ago.:Motomartin

HP2S or S1000RR

I wouldn't trade my Hp2S for a S1000RR!

Simple reasoning: The Hp2S will be a limited edt. bike. Made less than 500 so far, maybe as few as 250 bikes (se another thread).

The S1000RR is NOT a limited edition bike! So get the HP2S, ride it and when MAYBE the S1000RR HP4 Sport comes, go for that!

If we're lucky the Hp2S will be a collectors item, there's no chance for the S1000RR to be that! :-P

Be well my fellow HP2S riders! oh, and the rest of ya too! ;-)

Somebody told me that the 20,000 mile service on an HP2 Sport cost £3,500! Something about an engine rebuild.

Just check the service costs.:augie

At 50,000 kms (31,250 miles) there is a special engine check scheduled - happily not before:) - I can't see this being more than a complete top end visual examination, but..........I hope you are wrong about the cost!!
Anyway I have done 10,000 miles now so I guess I will get there first. Will keep you posted...........:Motomartin
