OK - let's have all your Speedo, (Motometer), numbers, so that we can figure out what the score is.

Logically there should only be FOUR
(certainly for the paralever Bikes)

R80 KPH
R80 MPH/KPH
R100 KPH
R100 MPH/KPH

But

I have

R80G/S & R80G/S MPH/kph = W1244
R80 KPH only - I do not have one anymore - can someone supply the number

R100GS MPH/kph = W1186
R100GS KPH only = W715

now I also have W737 = on an early R100GS PD KPH

(Please), have a look at yours - there must be some logic to all this.......so many feet per second in top or kph per god knows what

Does someone know what the numbers mean

Hi Bill,
Just ran out and had a butchers at mine...my speedo is a W1244. As my R80g/s bike has been converted to a faux R100GSPD with all the running gear from a G/S to the top half/fairing etc of a paralever, I was wondering what my correct speedo should be? I believe I must have a R100 gearbox fitted as my indicated speed on the current W1244 is 85 mph when I am in fact 68-69 mph in the real world speed !!!
I'm wondering if a W1186 would correct this error ?

Bit complicated that Kenny, no idea????.....but it looks a good bet to try i.e. a W1186

Also when you look at the rear axle ratios the R80GSs seem out of line:

R80G/S = 3.36:1
R80GS = 3.09:1
R80GS Basic = 3.20:1
(but they all have the same Speedo W1244)

R100GS & PD = 3.20:1
(Info taken from the MicaPeak Site - could they be wrong for the R80GS Basic?)

Do we need to look at the gearbox ratios as well, (R80GS versus R80GS Basic versus R80G/S -but I thought that they have exactly the same gearbox?), .....am I missing something in this lot.....???

Any other comments on Speedo accuracy versus the W??? that you have

Could keep us up all night this one.........unless there is an obvious answer................i.e. they are all the same and none are accurate!!!!

I've a complete list of speedo numbers matched to rear bevel drive ratios and bike models.

I'll post it up later.

Thanks you Mr Moderator..................hopefully UK and Continental sizes

R65GS (12/87) W793 kph
R100GS ('89) W1186 mph

Does someone know what the numbers mean

W1244 - matches the 37:11 ratio rear bevel 800cc (50 BHP) and the R60 range /6 /7
W1186 - matches the 32:10 rear bevel 800cc (55BHP) and the R75 /6 /6

R80G/S = 3.36:1
R80GS = 3.09:1
R80GS Basic = 3.20:1
(but they all have the same Speedo W1244)

R100GS & PD = 3.20:1

I have no speedo numbers in my old parts book for those rear bevel ratios.
Newer parts book just lists the GS range as having two speedos - one each for the 80occ and 1000cc

So we now have the following:

R65G/S = W793 KPH

R80G/S & R80G/S MPH/kph = W1244
R80 KPH only - ???

R100GS MPH/kph = W1186
R100GS KPH only = W715
early R100GS KPH only = W737

from Neil - "W1186 - matches the 32:10 rear bevel ( 800cc 55BHP)" - Neil is that one correct, should it be 1000cc

R80 KPH is W747 :thumb

Thanks Thunder

updated list:

R65G/S KPH only = W793

R80GS & R80G/S MPH/kph = W1244
R80 KPH only = W747

R100GS MPH/kph = W1186
R100GS KPH only = W715
early R100GS KPH only = W737

Have we got anyone out there with a R80G/S KPH?

We now need to match the bevel box and gearbox ratios to these.....which is relatively easy

I've got an 80 g/s KPH packed away in the garage, if you don't get the details today I'll dig it out.

Bill did you recieve a PM from me yesterday? :nenau

Nope, that is correct. I've had a couple of 55bhp models, very crisp bikes, feels more than 5bhp difference to the standard model.

R80 G/S KPH only, is W773.

Of course mine is knackered too! Any info on where to get a new one greatly appreciated. I want to keep it KPH only.

Thanks.

W

W means 'Wegsteckenzahl' ('travel-distance-index-number'), which equals the number of rotations for 1Km and/or 1mile (a mile would need more W's) travel on the speedo - this is both for recorded milage and speed.

Oh, this is of course different for various final drives, rear wheel & (original) tyre sizes, etc - depending on the bike model...

Hope this will help? :toungincheek

Jonathan.

Jonathan

Thanks, that's logical and helps a lot

8 divided by 5 = 1.6 and 1244 divided by 773 = 1.6093 = miles to kms conversion

The ST and G/S speedo heads are the same i.e. KPH only is W773

Therefore logically one would assume that the MPH/KPH Speedo head for the ST = 80G/S = 80 GS = W1244

Bill,

I hope I didn't spoil the mystery of the W's for you with the dull German locic of the 'Wegstreckenzahl' :blast

Did I win a prize? :JB Perhaps you will find a left side panel in original red for my ST to sell to me?

I love those German "one" words that combine about 5 or 6 "things"

I think that helicopter is another....but there are many

I think that I have a side panel somewhere, but it is "army" green, but not around for a few weeks

Cheers

Bill
