The rear preload adjuster knob thingy. I counted 30 clicks, I think, from the lowest setting.

Anyway, it's not wallowing in corners anymore, especially when opening the throttle early (which is something I'm enjoying about the GS).

The fact that I'm fat and round may also have something to do with it :augie

I think so too, but turning the adjuster is a lot cheaper than a pair of new shocks..

Riding with a puncture is cheaper than replacing the tyre, but that doesn't make it right. I use that analogy because if you lose the hydraulic preload completely it will be like riding with a flat rear tyre - you'll go from maximum to minimum preload without warning which could be dangerous and, as others have pointed out, needing it on maximum is an indication of impending failure.

Not sure why you'd think it's necessary to replace the front one as well as the rear either.

OE shocks can be rebuilt or there are usually a few available used on here or on eBay. Don't risk riding on suspension that you know to be failing. :rob

I don't know for a fact that the shocks are going, as I've never owned a bike with decent suspension anyway.

It's booked in for some work on May 1st, I'll get RGM to take a look.

Good Fix

The link for topping up the remote adjuster is a useful tip, I have done as suggested in the link and now have a lot more adjustment available, 1100 with 45000 miles.:)

Yes it does seem to work, not sure if the oil seeps out somewhere over time? Who knows. :nenau What it did for me though is that where before I had to have the preload adjuster screwed down near the high setting I now have it set near the standard position.

I like easy fixes:thumb2

I've just completed it as well. :D i now have resistance right from the very softest setting, before it had to be wound several turns before any resistance was felt. :D 2004 1150 55,000 miles.

"Crikey" just done this on my 96 1100GS and What a differance :)

Now what about the Front one :bounce1 Do i send it away for a service or find a skip to store it in
