Hi,
Is it wise to store my helmet in my GSA BMW topbox whilst at work during this hot weather?
I commute a couple of times/week on my bike and store my helmet in my top box to save me having to carry it around. However my bike is outside and not in the shade and on a couple of occasions I have noticed that my helmet has been pretty hot due to the heat inside the metal box. Could this potentially damage my helmet?
Cheers

Only if your head is in it.

A sacrcastic reply from Wapping, I never thought I'd see the day :augie;)

Does anyone know whether the heat will damage the integrity of the helmet, and thus making it unsafe for riding?

I keep mine in my top box whilst at work, is it any hotter than riding in direct sunlight all day :nenau

what about all those that live in extreme heat and ride bikes, i would say its fine but im no helmet expert ( did i really just write that ) :D

OK then, let's look at it another way.

Rather like the old Tommy Cooper joke, "Doctor, doctor, it hurts when I do this".... "Don't do it then".

Are you unhappy with the temperature your helmet / the inside of your topboix rise to on the few odd days of warm weather we get? If so, take it out and put your own mind at rest.

How many helmets do you think get sold around the globe each year?

How many do you think get worn and clamped to bikes or lobbed into cars for hours or days on end at sustained temperatures much higher than even sunny Kent? Do they melt? Are the good folk of Arizona or Athens forever replacing their boncedomes when the average daytime temperatures sit above 100? No, of course not.

Have to agree with you LBL I keep mine in my ally pannier when at work.

Why not cover the outside of the top box with foil? Better still, get one of those space blanket thingies they use at the end of marathons (or snickers as they call em now:D) they're much more durable than foil.:Motomartin

Wahey. Slightly off topic (sorry mods) but that was my 500th post.

Thanks for the question Snerks. In all seriousness, I don't think it matters, but if you are genuinely concerned, talk to your helmet manufacturer.

If you cover the helmet in tin foil it will reflect the heat and unwanted mind probes. It's a win win solution.

;)...............

There's the answer.
Convert your topbox into a louvred Stephenson Screen affair - problem solved - security with ventilation (and, depending on the execution of your conversion, quite some style too) :thumb2

Hot helmets in summer :eek

Nice to see the forum is back to what it does best :D
