Had a couple of hours today and thought I'd take a crack at beefing up the rear rack.

Buy a couple of bookshelf brackets in a local DIY shop (€6)

Mark out where it's to be cut.

Cut to size with a hacksaw

Bend into shape

Shorten bracket to size

Cut a small piece from the end of the bracket

Drill hole & bolt to frame. I still need to bolt the bracket to the luggage rack

Before bolting it to the luggage rack I'm going to run some 20mm x 2mm steel bar along the inside the frame to beef it up a little more. Like the photo below.

I always overloaded the rack on my 1100 GS, I even drilled holes in it just where they crack to add another rack onto it and it has yet to crack! (I kept the rack when I sold the bike). Kitchen sink tours rule!!!

Yeah - reckon they are strong enough unless you go off roading with a full top box. That said, I decided I'd beef it up anyway. Prevention better then cure and all that!
