Newly discovered ferry route

We used this ferry last September to come back from Spain. It takes about 14 hours and saves a lot of mileage and at least one hotel stop, so it does make economic sense, and as we live less than 2 hours from St Nazaire it's very convenient for us and Gijon is only about an hour from the Picos region. The only slight downside we found was that the boat always had an uncomfortable side to side rolling motion, but we're given to understand that a replacement ship will come in to service that is fully stabilised.
 
..... but that's 400 miles from Calais, unless you get a ferry from the south of England?

Can't see any use of this unless you're already in the area...
 
A lot of people travel from the south of England and there may even be someone in the area (such as us this year). It's just information, and knowledge is power :beerjug:

Roll on The TDC in September! the Dolomites! we will try and get over to see you before then, did you ever find the pannier?:)

Hope you manage to get over before September, be good to see you. The pannier was lost forever, someone might find it at the bottom of the gorge in years to come, and marvel at the clothes we wore in past years !!
 
Superb posting, thanks for this, I've just booked Newhaven to Dieppe (leaving a day or so to meandour through northern France) then St Nazaire to Gijon with the bike including cabin an a really convenient overnight crossing (2100-1100) then back again about 9 days later all for £243!!! I cannot think that there is a better, cheaper and more relaxing way to get to the Pyrennees/ Picos. GSPod I will buy you abeer some day!:beer::beer::beer:
 
I'm glad the info is of use to you.
We are planning a similar trip end of June/ beginning of July:
Newhaven/dieppe - St Naz/Gijon. Then 3 weeks around rural Spain and Santander/Portsmouth.
I agree in that it's a handy overnight and we'll be a little further west which is better for the Galician coast.

I think the rolling motion on the ship may have less to do with the stabilisers on the ship and more to do with the low-frequency Atlantic swell. No stabilisers in the world can deal with that!
 
Great post. Excellent if you're on a short break and want to see a bit of France before heading over to the west of Spain and Portugal. Money-wise it's good too considering hotel and fuel bills. :thumb

going to santander then down to villa moro next tues 24th may would certainly have used your route if i had known any other tossers on same ferry give us a shout and we could meet up:jager:jager
