Michelin Anakee 2, Dunlop Roadsmart or Tourance (exp)? Which is Best??

My 2010 GSA came with Anakee 2s and I think they are a good tyre, but after my trip to the Alps I will require new tred. I have read various reports on the Tourance and exp's, also on the Dunlop roadsmarts but not found much on the Anakee 2s. Thoughts and comments please.......:flag

i would say that most tyres fitted to the gs/a by bmw are much the same - bridgestone battlewings/conti trail attack/metzeler tourance - i have ridden the three that i have quoted and would say that i preferred the conti trail attack
 
had tourances on my gsa and wanted to try anakees which i did,2 new anakees on and have a flat [nail in tyre]when i get home[25 miles].take the wheel of and go back to tyre depot and they cant get the patch to stick properly so tyre is scrap,could have happened to a tourance as well i hear u say but the techie told me that michelin and conti tyres are hard to patch compared to others,now that may be a lame excuse on his part but ive had a tourance patched before with no issues.luck wasnt on my side that day:tears
found the tourances get a bit vibey when they get half worn which is why i wanted to try the anakees which seem fine either in the wet or dry

Thats interesting to know about the patching, agree with the vibey when they get half worn.
 
My 2010gs came w Anakee 2, then changed to tourance exp. I liked the exp, but preferred the anakee. I went back to them. Next tyres will be conti road attack.

I found anakee easier to feel, just a preference thing.

Both good tyres and you can't go wrong.
 
Had EXP and Tourance. EXP a much better road tyre IMO. Apparently they wear faster though. I got 5500 out of mine, apparently I should expect approx 8k out of the Tourance.
 
If you intend to ride 100% tarmac then a 100% road tyre would seem best up to the job. I 've got Dunlop Roadsmarts fitted to my Tiger 1050 and Guzzi Stelvio and they work very well. I previously had Conti Road Attacks fitted to the Stelvio but I prefer the feel of the new Roadsmarts.
I can't comment on the Michelin Anakee, but I had the old style Tourances originally fitted to my GS1150, they were ok, good mileage, but I never felt fully confident with them in the wet, so changed to a 100% road tyre (Bridgestone 020 - excellent). After a couple of sets of those I tried Conti Trail attacks which seemed ok but I swapped the bike before I did big miles on them.

Just out of interest have you had conti road attacks before or have you just heard good reports on them? Also what mileage did you get out of the Anakee's and Tourance's?

I am currently running my first set of Trail Attacks (3000 miles in, and still loads of tread!).

Have previously run the original Anakee's, and two sets of the old Dunlop Trailmax.

Anakee's gave most confidence in the wet...but were a little bit "squirrily" when banked over hard when riding progressively, and did square off a little sooner that I would have liked.

Trailmax were not quite as good in the wet...but fantastic for pure road work, as the grip/confidence was inspiring, especially in dry conditions. Forget even mild off road work though, these were best kept on tarmac.

Trail Attacks seem to be a good combination of the two so far, confidence inspiring on the road, pretty good in the wet (no scary moments), good wear characteristics and chunky enough for mild off road forays.

Each to their own...haven't yet tried Tourance/EXP, so can't comment on these

ps - Anakee 2's here, good tyre but very sensitive to correct pressures.

I like Anakees. But you will get better grip, longer wear and a tougher dirt road tyre in a Continental Trail Attack. Tourances will last, but grip is iffy.

Never had road attacks before, I have heard good things and so I thought I might try them out if interest really. I agree with the idea that if you are going to ride offroad get appropriate tyres. For the 95% road and 5% graded dirt roads I ride I want road tyres. I'll just deal with the dirt when/if it comes up during the life of those tyres.

Anakee 2 I got about 11000km out of first set, looks like about the same for the second set. EXP I got slightly more, say 13000km thereabouts...

Not terribly impressed with Roadsmarts to be honest, yes they are great when new, excellent grip but they don't wear too well, this one shown below has done about 3,700 miles, steel cord showing through, and it was bald at 3,000 ish.
OK, they were a fairly hard 3,000 or so miles on the back of my 1100 :roll, one of my mates thought I'd been on a track day:eek:
Had to nurse it back from the ferry at Hull on the last leg of my 7 day france trip, I never let my tyres get this bad but I was just shocked at the way it disappeared in front of my eyes while we were away, handling went really bad towards the end as well, because due to the hard centre section it wore like a "Threepenny bit" shape and you could feel it steering from the back when you tipped it into corners.

Michelin Pilot road 2's get my vote :thumb2, I've had one on the back of my 954 Fireblade for almost 6,500 miles now ( its almost shot ) but its worn very evenly, not flatted at all and still handles well.

Just changed from tourances to anakees and the difference is vast, so far the anakees are really impressing me, the ride quality is far superior, turn in is faster and less vibey (the tourances were half worn tho) but the main difference is when you hit a cats eyes or white lines, on the tourances it was like hitting the brakes :eek: but the anakees just glide over them. So far so good then, see what they are like in the alps next week:D
 
Love the grip of the Roadsmart, but mine is looking about half done at under 2,000 miles of mixed riding and I doubt it will make 4k.

I am harder on tyres than some, and it is probably on par with what I could get out of a Tourance EXP but I was hoping for better from a Sports Touring tyre - I got 4k out of them on a ZZR1400 which was typically travelling @20 mph faster most of the time (yes, I do ride the GS at 40mph everywhere)
 
Hi, I am running an 08 GSA on Battlewings, no problems but I don't really go off road so would prefer the best grip I can for a European tour rather than looks so looking at Roadsmarts also. Read earlier posts regarding Michelin Pilot Roads and wondered if anyone else has tried these. Only ask since Michelin state the GS tyre sizes are a road development of the Anakee 2 hence are radials marked 'R'; all other Pilot Roads are 'ZR' though looking at the forum Dunlops seem to be the more popular. Also looking at the Dunlop TR91 also just out, dual development of the Roadsmart I think??
