There is something raw about it I agree.I bet you could achieve a similar effect for much less cash by getting a custom paint job, knobblies & crash bars on an R1200R 
Wish they did a kit for older GSer's. I love it but a bit too much to buy a bike in order to buy the kit. If I had an old 1200 I would buy this rather than upgrade. Think I've found my new screen saver.

It's a complete plastic model, as witnessed by the lack of the telelever link at the front (although the shock is still visible).

Wouldn't mind just the tank...in white looks orrible in blue...as I've always thought the tank let down the overall look of the 1200gs.
