Keyless technology has just made the news.

"It is becoming much harder to steal cars. According to the UK Office for National Statistics, car theft has fallen from 318,000 in 2002 to 77,500 last year."

I love the BBC.

It follows on from very old pronouncements that very bad men with scanners would track all remote locking fob signals and steal all the cars in the world.

This never happened.

It is of course much easier to steal a motorbike through the simple expedient of picking it up, than buggering around with PC's in the street. Failing that, nick the clocks, lights, wheels, mirrors and / or anything that is easy to undo.

I've placed an order for a 2015 GSA but without keyless ignition. I could not see its use if you still require a key for luggage, seats and gps.

The comment from the AA guy at the end of the article is very pertinent - no need for any fancy technology, just a big hammer, jemmy or cordless angle grinder.

"By far the most common way of a car being stolen is still from thieves breaking into homes and stealing keys," he said.

Keyless riding, a solution to a problem that never existed. So if an insurer decides they do not want to cover a £15000+ bike which may be stolen easilly for only £250 PA what's the problem. No way would I invest in a company which takes such risks for so small a return.
The Keyless system can be scanned, car insurers are facing the same issues with security.
Why is it required??????
A brave person who orders one form BMW, its take years tor resolve the ring antenna fiasco, make sure you always carry a phone and recovery card, on past performance you will need it.

Keyless is one of the things that BMW has mastered. EVERY car now sold by BMW has keyless start. I'm on my sixth BMW car with keyless start, and haven't had one issue, and from the other forums that I occasionally visit, haven't heard of one reported issue with the system in their cars.

We'll see how it fares on the bikes, but I'm confident that there won't be any issues.:thumb

Same for me not being biased as I work for BMW (car manufacture) I too have BMW cars x 2 per year no issues at all with the keyless in fact I love it.
I also had a Harley back in 2010 with keyless start I had it for 18 months 24.000 miles no issues again thought it was brilliant.

The next GS I have will be keyless.

I'd sooner have a reliable key in the middle of a desert etc,as with other electronics the more their is the more to potentialy go wrong ! ok you may do 1000s of reliable miles BUT time will tell if gremlins strike on tour :augie

Nah, keys are no more reliable. Ring antenna issues put paid to that.:D

That would be a fair statement if you were riding around with all the luggage on, all the time, and constantly taking the SAT Nav off and putting it back on every time you stopped, whilst taking the seat off regularly to adjust the hieght?
Personally - I think its great..

I hate keyless. I often get to the end of my journey and have to search all my pockets and under the seats to find the fob. The handy slot in a keyed ignition is a good place to store the key while you are driving
