Has anyone fitted an Autocom to their F650GS, where is the best place to put it and wire it in, Ideally want it to power on when ignition switch is on (as bike doesn't get used much, don't want to drain battery)?

Bikergary

Carcher2k and I have Autocom systems fitted. He did the wiring and cabled 2610/Nav I GPS units in. The Auticom unit was cabletied under one of the tubes under the seat. Carcher2k can explain how he wired them in as I'm a numpty in those matters.

It sure worked a treat and let me hear the GPS instructions and my Ipod while doing the UK Coastal tour. :) PB

Speak of the devil... :D

Gary, autocom is piece of cake.

Under the seat, lose the toolkit, and strap the autocom to the frame/bar that runs across the bike above it.

From here, run the power leads towards the fusebox.

Remove the fusebox, and locate the thicker, plain green wire underneath. This is an ignition feed. strip the coating, and solder in the red power wire from the a/com.

make sure you tape up the soldered joint, use heat shrink if possible.

Fix an electrical eyelet to the black a/com earth, and affix it to a bolt on the frame (there's one just below the fusebox)

Tape the two wires up first, just looks neater under the seat, rather than having loads of wires sprawled everywhere.

Route your headset leads to wherever suits you!

Job done :thumb

Carcher, is the green wire only live when the ignition is on or live only when the engine is running?
Personally, I'd prefer to wire any accessories into a circuit that's only powered when the engine is running thus saving the battery when it's not running.

This is excellent! I've just bought one of these on t'ebay, and was just wondering what the best thing to do with it would be. Thanks very much to you all - hopefully it'll be with me on Weds and I can play with it at the weekend. Don't suppose you've got any pics or know where any are of the system in place?

that circuit is live when the ignition is turned on. it would be possible to wire it in when the engine is running, but i've never tried that, so couldn't tell you how. I've never had any problems with battery drain, and i have the GPS wired in to ignition feed too.

sorry, no pics of the system, i went off roading on the ridgeway and shook it to bits :D

i'm getting another one soon, but i'm gonna be wiring it into an optimate plug to go into the on board socket. that way i can take it off when i go anti tarmaccing!!

Excellent, thanks guys, i shall have a look at setting this up this weekend.
Won't have to worry about taking off road, Misses won't go off road, and she will never let me take it off road, especially afetr what I did when I took my 1100GS off road :D

Bikergary,

It is an Active Rider unit and I ziptied it here with the plugs and volume control facing the rear of the bike. I put some bedroll foam between it and the frame to minimise vibrations.

Just a quick question on this if anyone's looking - is the earth the same as battery negative as in the fitting instructions? Probably a stupid question, but not obvious to the electrically inept like me?!

the earth is the same as the battery negative, but you dont necessarily have to go to the battery terminal itself...

if you find a fixing on the bike the screws into the frame that is close to where you are attaching the autocom, use a multimeter and put it on ohms (lowest setting), or alternatively, there will be setting that when you touch the probes together, you get a tone...chose either if the these, put one end on the negative terminal of the battery, and put the other end on the fixing that you want to attach the autocom to...if its on the buzzer setting of the multimeter, then it will sound, if on ohms, a good earth will show as 0.1 to 0.2 ohms...basically showing you a good circuit back to the earth connection of the battery. any probs, pm me.

i attached my girlfriends autocom inside the cover that you remove to access the seat release with some 3m sticky backed velcro, picked up an earth just beside that, and the positive was picked off the tail light...just tapped in beside the spade connector of the light.

Thanks a lot people! I have now installed one fully functioning autocom - although to be on the safe side, I ran the negative line up to the battery terminal. No wonder servicing is so expensive when it's so awkward to find anything under all that plastic!!

Cheers.

Stuart.

I cancelled the fitting of the autocom due to taking to long to change the oil on my bike :D , but I'll have a go next week as I'm off.

Thanks for all your advise and help, and good to see someone else benifitting from this thread :thumb

Gary - a tip (a chance to learn from the expert ;) !!) - be very careful if you take the panels off the 'faux' tank in front of the seat - I broke one of the lugs on mine (not very clever) trying to get it off. Once all the screws are out, it lifts off vertically, not (as I was trying) horizontally!! :o

Ooopsss. I'll remeber that. I haven't taken any of the plastic off yet, Thanks for that.

You should be able to repair it, i hope as long as it's not cracked the panel.

Having just picked my bike up, i was looking at fitting an autocom, luckily looks like i found the right place then, where the tools currently are!!

Thanks for the info though guys, least i know it will be happy there!!

Was looking at wiring it to the accessory socket? and then can plug the gps directly in there when thats needed to?

Oh Gemma - you've already started the decline into GS madness! Hope you haven't got hold of the Touratech catalogue yet :D
