battlefield routes?

anyone got a good route to visit ww1 sites ? belgium....
i am considering taking the boy as he is doing this subject as part of gcse.
plus i love this kind of stuff.

we have a planned five days to get there look enjoy and get home..

i plan to camp unless someone feels sorry for us and puts us up!!!!

so any ideas boys relying on your amazing ability to come up with the goods ..

Slimbo, Is it just World War I he's studying or World War II as well? Only asking as I've got more WWII waypoints if he needs them.

taff hes doing both m8 but i thought it waould be interesting for the both of us , to look at wwi to start with..

Love any WW1 waypoints you have for Ypres.. off there on the 30th for day trip.....

Peronne

Just off the A2 about an hour and a half from the Dover - Calais ferry, there's a town called Peronne.

Its in the heart of Somme country and has a large Castle which houses a good museum. Its got good displays of WW1 uniforms and equipment.

Theres a camp site in the town near the canal, it was closed when i was there but looks okay.

Just outside the town is a narrow gauge railroad which used to do resupply runs to the troops in the trenches. It's open for rides at certain times of the year.

A good area to start in if coming over from Dover to Calais

World War II waypoints as requested. I have added Whattons WWII waypoints to ones I already had. I haven't got time at the moment to remove duplications, but mine are in CAPITAL letters if you need to sort them out.

I thought I had some WWI waypoints, but I didn't. When we did the trip, I didn't have GPS but you can see a load of the ones I remember on WHATTONS THREAD Post No 88.

My brother and I are due to head over to visit Ieper, the Ypres Salient, and then the Somme in June.

If I've done this right then our itinerary should be attached below. I'm not saying we're going to stick to it but I enjoyed putting it together. We're booked in to the Hortensia B&B in Ieper and then the Bernafay Wood B&B just east of Albert.

Monte cassino

Obviously too far to go but one that people don't normally do is Monte Cassino.
There is a good campsite in the Town, superb Views from the monastery (7kms uphill) and its a good base for doing Italy.
I took rides out to Taranto (Where we Taught the Japs how to do Pearl Harbour)Salerno, Anzio (small museum of Allied attempt to outflank Gustav line) and also saw tarts plying trade in Laybys.
Back in Belgium, Bastogne is good for Battle of Bulge museum.
Also Verdun is excellent especially the Ossary where bits of 100,000 unknown soldiers are.
Finally, check out the Wargraves commission website to find the graves of any relatives you may have.
