Here's some good news for all off-road riders: The Garmin 2820 and its twin, the BMW Nav III, now support multiple map datums and multiple units of measure for latitude and longitude. 34 different position formats are supported, and 6 different map datums are supported. I have included photos of the datums and formats that I think would be of interest to UK riders - if you don't see a format or datum that you need, please let me know and I will collect all the requests and forward them in a single note.

This feature was added in response to requests made by all the off-road moto riders who use Garmin GPSRs.

New Feature - Map Datums and Position Formats

Does it support UTM and if not could this be requested ?

Thanks

Oh, and can the compass screen be added to the SP2820, perhaps turned off by default but there if you want it.

Hi Burnie:

It supports a position format labelled 'UTM UPS' - not sure if that is what you seek or not. I didn't take pictures of every position screen - that would have required 9 pictures.

The compass screen (RMI indicator) is unique to the BMW Navigator, it is a design feature that BMW requested.

Yes, UTM UPS is it. Eastings and Northings are commonly used on topo maps.
That and the compass screen would make the unit more useful offroad.

What size tracklog does the SP2820 have ? Does it support Trackback ?
(Again useful features offroad)

Hi Burnie:

I don't know the exact size of the tracklog, however, I made a 1,500 km trip with it last month, and that only filled up about 65% of the tracklog. So - it is pretty big.

I don't think any of the automotive GPSRs support Trackback - if they did, some American would activate it, go driving the wrong way down a divided highway, hire a lawyer, and sue Garmin for all they could get.

Quest 1 does..........(unless it doesn't count as an automotive GPSR..........:D)

Quest and GPSmap 276C will do it.

These features are not required for onroad but if you have a dualsport (and use it as one :P ) then UTM, compass screen, large tracklog and Trackback are very useful offroad.
