Givi bags and a GSA

Just about to order a 1200 GSA. :clap

Should I go for the BMW panniers which are a shed load of money :eek: OR do I buy the Givi ones which are cheaper. :nenau Need a top box and sides. I only really use them once or twice a year and on road touring.

There is a big issue of style and credibility here but some help needed. Also any pics of a GSA with Givi's would be appreciated.

Although only on the standard GS I steered clear of GIVI side cases as they make the bike even wider. I had GIVI on my Caponord and they really do make the things wide.

I went with BMW cases and a GIVI top box as I now have the choice of 52l or 36l top box if needed.

To be honest Talaris there are a few other choices especially for panniers than the BMW versions or GIVI, personally using S W motechs which serve the purpose well. When removed everything can be taken off with very little left on the bike if they are for occasional use.

Just bought the Givi Rails

Hi Mate,

I bought the Givi rails for the GSA but am having trouble fitting them. Basically the rails connect to the bike in three places, a bolt under the rear foot peg and two bolts into the side of the bike. Its impossible to get all three places to line up without putting undue pressure on one of the other two bolts.

Im hoping to do some filing and drilling to make the fit a bit better and maybe upgrading the quality of the bolts that come with the kit to make sure they are as secure as possible.

Has anyone tried to bend the Givi tubes (the one that connects the rack to the rear footpeg) as this would solve a lot of problems.

Would I weaken the metal by bending it very slightly? :nenau

I second Shauns recommendation for the SW motech cases - excellent kit with bags of storage space (more than the Givis for the same if not less width) and great QD system for the racks plus cheaper than Givis. The only critiscism of them is that my version held the boxes very high on the bike (I cut and welded them to make them lower) but by the look of Shauns picture they appear to have changed this.

The BM ally panniers are expensive,but they work bloody well.
The inner bags fit like a glove and are also fully waterproof so you can double your luggage capacity by strapping them on top of the panniers (with straps provided).

On top of that,the whole lot uses just the ignition key to be fully secured/locked.

And let's face it,the GIVI bags do look pretty shite on a GS.

There's another thread on this site that questions the quality of the BMW GSA panniers.

I looked into all the makes available (ultimately fitting the GS Vario ones for now) and decided that the Touratech Zega and Metalmule were the best constructed of the lot.

If I outgrow the Varios - it's Metalmule that will get my money :thumb

1200 gsa and givi

hi folks

just fitted givi side frame rack on my 1200 gsa fitted perfect quite impressed looks neat and matches the frame well bieng black e41 boxes look big but if you want the room thats how they are i personally dont like the ally coffin ones as there expensive and leak /mark your clothes

Just fitted mine

I didn't need to bend any metal in the end (refer my post above) and just mounted the rails starting with the middle bolt (that goes through a "sleeve" into the side of the bike) and worked from there. Needed a few washers to fill in a 2mm gap on one of the fixing points but the rack seemed pretty rock solid once it was all tightened up.

I replaced the standard Givi bolts with high tensile steel just to make sure the rack was secure as could be.

And yep they are pretty wide. 112cm from pannier to pannier. I am using two old E41 Givi panniers which are probably wider than the newer Givi panniers.

Photos to follow tomorrow once I learn how to do it.

Still in two minds. The new Givi E41 look, IMO, ok on a red/white GS as they do match colour wise. OK they don't look so hard core as the alloy ones.

Any one got a picture of the rear of the aloy ones, Zega, Metal Mule and BM along with a measured width please.

Kinda thinking Metal Mule or Zega oBM side cases and Zega topbox. Again any pics please. :thumb

Counting down til Thurs delivery day :D :D although SWMBO says she won't like it as no heated seats :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

Looks from the photo that you have gone for the narrow exhaust can and rails to allow symetrical panniers - good choice :thumb
