This seems such an obvious thing to do that I'm sure it's not the first time you will have seen it done. However, I have never seen it done to a bike before :nenau

Take one pair of Oxford 'wrap around' heated handle bar thingies (£29 from Hein Gerricke). One piece of Gaffer tape to protect the frame paint under the on/off switch and some cable ties.

Take 30 minutes to install and then, come spring, another 30 mins to remove, ready to go on again next winter :thumb2

Just been out for a test ride and SO is mighty impressed :clap

It must be a Dead Head thing.....;)

Strangely enough, I was going to take out a subscription to Bike Magazine, partly because they were giving away these Oxford heated grip wraps as part of the promotion. I was then going to attach them in exactly the same way.

I didn't bother in the end because I rarely, if ever, carry a pillion passenger.

Could they be used as boot inners ?? perhaps not on the sole, but around the ankles .

Just goes to show what considerate, caring people old hippies are :D

Are these hot grips too hot to put round the standard pannier rails on an 1150? Dont think these things will be hot enough but never tried them before.

Similar heat to setting number one on the 1200 bar grips (not sure if that's similar to the 1150 :nenau ).

SO found them a bit too warm today (not a cold day and 'heavy' summer gloves) so used the on/off switch to regulate the heat.

I use a pair of these Hot Hands and they do get very hot indeed. Too hot in fact and just last week I emailed Oxford and suggested they produce a variable temperature switch similar to the one they use on their Hot Grips. They did respond and said it would be considered. If others were to email them as well then they may be persuaded by customer feedback to follow this through. Get to it guys.:thumb

Good idea to use them for a pillion but I'll never need to as my wife is strictly a Summer pillion rider.

Good idea that. The Doris only said to me yesterday when I complained that setting 2 on my 1150GSA grips was a bit too much, while her hands were cold "can't you get heated love handles?". If I wrapped these around the love handle grips the switch could just hang or be attached to the belt I suppose - brilliant! :thumb

Another idea is to wrap them around the handles of these pillion belts the rider wears,(love handles, pillion pals etc).
Seen it done and works a treat.

Great idea!! :clap

I will have to think about putting something on the GSA handles as they aren't as think and HG are now selling them for £50!! But you can find them on ebay for around 35 of your earth pounds

My better half is coming over in a couple weeks, I think she will be well chuffed!

Thinking along the same lines as you. If you come up with any ideas for something to wrap round the grab rails let us know! I was vaguely thinking about a layer or 2 of that stuff you can get to wrap round tennis racquet handles just to stop the things sliding around but I don't really know how thick the handle would need to be.

Saw a bike with this done some time ago, just after these heaters came out. The guy said his girlfriend wasn't much impressed, with her hands on the grab rails it put her arms out into the windflow which made her colder than before...

Suppose it depends on where the rails are situated on the bike.

I've ordered mine from ebay, hopefully they'll arrive before the weekend and I can have a go at fitting them. I'll let you know how I get on :thumb2

Try water pipe insulation foam, you can get it in different sizes.

I had a slightly different idea, based on the fact that the frozen pillion passenger is going to tuck their hands in their lap to keep themselves as much out of the wind as possible (Hands on grab rails means cold arms and shoulders).

Place the heated grips on a length of stiff foam 'or similar' wire them to the bike with an in-line jack plug (this gives any easy break point if the passenger leaves the bike without un-plugging).

The passenger can hold the tube in their lap, thus keeping them out of the wind and in a comfortable place. The tube can be attached to the passenger via a loop/sling around their neck or waste.

The use of a soft tube helps to keep things safe in case of a fall. The switch can also be fitted to the tube for easy access by the passenger.

Just a quick note for anyone fitting these. I have just taken them off the 1200 to put on the handlebars of Denise's 125, and the heat has marked the paint of the grab rails. Just to make perfectly clear, this is not something that bothers me :augie, but may be worth noting for others.
