Hi Folks,
last year my PC crashed giving me momory errors, fatal stop warnings and BSOD's. After many attempts at fixing I had to concede and do a reformat/reinstall.

This week my daughters PC did the same trick and would not even boot from CD to the recovery console without BSOD, and would freeze when attempting safe mode or last known good settings etc.

Then I learnt a trick:

1) Format a blank floppy WITHOUT dos/startup files.
2) Under the drop down menus in MY COMPUTER select: TOOLS>FOLDER OPTIONS then click on the VIEW tab and uncheck the HIDE PROTECTED OPERATING SYSTEM FILES (Recommended) option.
3) Browse to MY COMPUTER (or an explorer pane) and copy from the root of C:\ the following files:

BOOT.INI
NTDETECT.COM
NTLDR

4) Insert the floppy, ensure BIOS will read the floppy drive first, power up then sit back and hopefully your PC will read the floppy then restart successfully.

If it restarts OK, do a disk scan and CHKDSK and/or use utilities to check for registry errors.

I hope this works for you if you have major problems rebooting a PC with Windows XP. I copied the files from my own PC as my daughters one was dead, and it brought her PC back to life avoiding the need to reformat/reinstall and lose data.
