How do you like my black exhausts?

Very nice....Me likeee :)

Go on then me old plucker.......spill the beans....How much, where, how long???:D

Unbelievably (considering how well it came out) I did it mysefl!

Pipes off - down to local firm for sandblasting - £30.

3 cans of this 'flameproof' VHT ceramic paint - £20

[checks to make sure girlfriend isn't looking] Cure the paint in the oven :D

Re-attach carefully trying not to scratch paint (not easy).

Bobs yer uncle!!

I'm well pleased with it actually - looks pretty professional and if you didn't know better you'd think they came like that as standard. It 'fits', if you know what I mean. Only let down is the SS brackets.

Just been out for a long hard blast and there's no sign whatsover of any tarnishing or discolouration - fingers crossed it lasts.

It won`t last more than a month or two mate.

It will start to 'grey' after a while, then start flaking off.

It can be helped to a longer life by liberal spraying with silicone spray, but it will eventually fall off.

I heard of a place that does coloured ceramic coatings on exhausts when I was at the last Northern BMW meeting,I`ll try to track it down.

Thanks - but don't worry - I already tracked down a company that does ceramic coating - but after talking to them I chose to have a bash at doing it myself.

I'm quietly confident that it will last. The stuff I used IS a ceramic coating. It was recommended to me by a guy who restores and races TR6's. He showed me a manufold he'd done in the stuff over a year ago that apart from being dirty was looking as good as new. Feckin hard stuff to track down though - I could only find 2 places in the UK that stocks it!! None o' yer halfords crap 'ere mate.

Fingers crossed - we shall see....

It looks great! I had the same thing done to my rusty looking KLR650's header pipe. Had it done with black ceramic coating, but it wasn't a DIY job, it was professionally done. Also, on my previous ride, an 1150RT, I had the header pipes coated with silver ceramic and it never turned blue or tarnished... but in either case, it wasn't cheap.

As Tarka says - a month and they'll be MUCH worse looking than blue-d chrome st/st pipes.

Just keep buying more paint - you could try a small tin of Hammerite brush on exhaust paint so you can keep touching them up.

As an ex- guzzi LM2 owner i feel qualified

ceramic pipes

hey there

any news on how they are looking after a bit more riding?

cheers

My bike id two years old in July and the header pipes have just been replaced under warranty because of the rust. Moral of the story..... get new ones before the two years is out

Yep - I'm about say, 1500? miles in now and the finish hasn't degraded in any way yet - I'm well pleased. The trick is in the 'curing' - the ceramic coating comes out of the can as a sort of wet powder, which then dries in place, but isn't a 'finish' as such at this point. It's not til you've 'cured' it in the oven that it becomes a proper hard ceramic coating, as long as you do the 'curing' stage properly - all should be well.

thanks for that sarge!

i'm currently in the process of rebuilding my adv and am considering doing the same to my headers. looks good btw;)

I had the same problem with my R100GS-PD - rusty exhaust pipes. I cleaned up the rust as best as I could and wiped them down with thinners. Then applied a few coats of Plasti-kote Industrial Hot Paint from Halfords. This claims to resist heat up to 650C. The instructions on the can does say that the finish must be cured between 315 and 345C but our fan oven only goes up to 230C so that had to do. So far, so good. After a week it still looks good but it it fails, I shall try the Flameproof stuff. Thanks for the tip.

So if anyone has pics of this bike after 8 years, or any pics of similarly coated or even ceramic coated downpipes after a number of years, could you update please?

I'll take some pic of mine, in the morning

20,000 (April to Oct) miles and still the same

Cuirious to see how they stand the test of time, and heat. Thinking of doing the same on my RT, is going to be painted completely black so if I can do the headers to, that'd be great.

Here you go, Bill...................3 years since they were done and 20,000 miles 'summer' March to October use

Look as good as they did, when they were first done

Ceramic coated by Camcoat in their 'chrome paint finish'

Cost about £85 collected

To clean, just wash with car shampoo and water - then polish with Tcut to get rid of any road muck or tar stains, then finish off with Mer for a deep shine :D
