Engine clanking noise

My engine has developed a clanking noise which seems to come from the RH cylinder. It sounds like a tappet but when I took it to the dealers they could not diagnose the problem, except to confirm that it was not a tappet, valve adjustment, cam chain rattle etc. They are now going to strip it down completely next week having said they have never encountered such a fault?!*
It does not run hot and pulls/accelerates as normal. Anyone got any ideas?

Is the noise present at all times and even stationary at idle speed?

Or is it speed dependent and does it get louder with increased speed?

Anyhow these mechanisms do go phut at times and it will be fixed at BMW cost no doubt.

Just make sure they put the repair details in your service log in the back of the small handbook with the dealer stamp/date/signature so that YOU have a written a record.

Then take it out for a thrash.

...Yes. Does this shed any more light?

I had the exact same problem.....

Turned out that my right hand cyclinder had been stripped by the piston. BMW replaced both pistons and cyclinders. Don't know how it happened but was fixed very quickly. I also had the same noise coming from the left hand cyclinder many weeks later but this was resolved as the bolts inside the the cyclinder head had worked loose.

PM if you need any other info.

Cheers

It does sound a bit like mega piston slap! It will be very interesting if the rings/piston/cylinder have failed and why? Surely it must be a material or other component manufacturing failure.

Hope all goes well.

Diagnosis

Dealer has called me today and tells me that the piston has picked up on the bore on the RH cylinder. BMW have told them that this is the first case of this happening...I don't think so...we know thats not true!!!! So your diagnosis was right...well done everyone! Now just got to wait for piston & cylinder to be shipped from Germany. YAWN

Hi all

I just spent the weekend at Reading University on a course, during discussions on cylinder glazing on narrowboat engines. the engineer mentioned that it was lucky that we had not got BWM engines in our boats as they have installed new machinery at their engine manufacturing plant. This uses a new process using new techniques, this is causing big problems with certain car engines, I suppose it could be the same with the latest bikes.

Just a thought!
