Hi I thought I would say hello as am new to the forum.

I just got hold of a 2010 30th Anniversary Edition GS Adventure so am looking forward to riding it after being on an old Suzuki DR 800 for the last couple of years which I am starting to find hard work due to the vibes on long trips. The GS I have has BMW stamps in the book up until 2017 and about 44k but now has about 52k on it and I am told it was owner serviced. Mot history looks like its not been used much at all since 2018 so I think I will need to do a bit of servicing. I normally do all my own servicing so am looking to bleed the brakes though with lots of new fluid, and change the oil and filters and final drive oil and put some 60% moly grease on the final drive splines so will be looking for guides and writeups/youtube videos etc. The tank came 3/4 full but I am not sure how old the petrol is so will take it for a good run to get rid of most of the old stuff and then fill the tank with some Esso ethanol free 99 octane.

Also there is some corrosion in places that I want to sort out, the rear wheel has flaking paint and corrosion and also some on the cylinder heads in places but I am told that is normal.

Looking forward to some good trips on the bike camping as it came with a nice set of boxes and looks like it has loads of room and will be nice to travel in comfort rather than having numb hands from the buzzing of the old single. ;)

Cheers Graham

I had a twin cam GSA for 5 years and it's a great bike. It's a very straightforward bike to do the routine servicing yourself. Haynes now do an online manual which is a one-off buy (it used to be by subscription) and it's a really useful manual, much better than the print book. There is a wealth of knowledge on this site (you should subscribe for the full benefit) if you have any tricky questions, someone on here will know the answer. There are guys here who can sort out Suspension or Final Drive problems if you have them, the suspension will almost certainly need a refurb if it's original. Otherwise it's 12 years old so ride it like you stole it and enjoy! :thumb2

Thanks I will have a look on the Haynes website and get the manual I have a print book that I bought a while ago as have been thinking about a GS for some time however it only goes up to 2009, also has a dire warning about trying to bleed the brakes yourself without a BMW computer but I believe I am ok in that respect as it refers to the models with servo brakes.

Hello Graham, fancy seeing you here................
Recognise this bike?:)

I bought an older GS1200 last year and liked it so much i splashed out on a new GSA1250 a few months later.
They are great bikes, but don`t let that put you off riding the Big - it`s good to have variety and choice in different bikes, there`s nothing wrong with a DR and i still enjoy riding mine, 800cc singles do have lots of character...

What will Bob say......!

Ha ha hi Hann yep I recognise that that's me busted. ;)

I love the DR for country lanes but I have tried all sorts to stop the vibration, new chain and sprockets, smoother tyres and new grips and grip puppies but get the vibes. I think its just the nature of the beast its more suited to the lanes than the motorway although maybe its just my one. Looking forward to getting out on the GS though this weekend will have to put some miles on it. :)

Well just had my first ride, just about 45mins along the coast and then back along the A27. I stalled a couple of times pulling away pulling away and then was in a panic to start the bike with cars behind. ;) I got the hang of it and had the bike up to an effortless 70mph on the dual carriageway. The indicators are going to take some getting used to but as its a BMW perhaps I don’t need them. :)

Got home and checked the oil on the centre stand, looks like I have too much oil and it doesn't look very clean.

Mind n check the manual for the brake/ clutch fluid type , I don’t think it’s standard Dot 4 stuff

Hi the brakes use DOT4 but the clutch uses mineral oil. I have got some Castrol Motorbike DOT4 brake fluid as I think it seems better quality than the normal stuff, also some Halfords 10w/40 semi synthetic motorbike oil for the oil change and have a K&N oil filter coming.

Don't panic over the oil level, it varies with temperature and whether or not the oil cooler thermostat has opened to let oil return to the sump from the beak mounted oil cooler. They are great bikes, I had my last one from 2009 until last month so almost 13 years. I did my own servicing and repairs including clutch and gearbox rebuild. I would recommend a GS911 device for diagnostics, service indicator reset etc. Also worth getting either a Carbtune, Harmonizer or making a homemade manometer to allow for balancing throttle bodies for smooth running.

There are a few specialists available should you need them:

For suspension, you can use MCT in Stowmarket, Firefox Racing in Keighley, or Denz0 of this forum who's based in Croydon (Thats Denz with a zero).

For gearbox, driveshafts and final drive work you have Mikeyboy on the forum (Mike Overy) at Overland & Classic.

For spares you obviously have BMW plus Motorworks and James Sherlock.

Enjoy the bike.

Thanks I will keep a note of all that that. I just drained out the oil, black as molasses so will finish the oil and filter change tomorrow and let it drain out. Hopefully I wont have any trouble for a while.
